What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Seems like to remove the fuse panel is pretty straight forward. Remove that trim pc under the steering column, and there should be bolts to take the fuse panel out. Basically that, or anything else I need to know?!

 

that's pretty much it. The bolts are a little tricky to get to but not too bad. If I remember correctly there's only two bolts. I would check first to see if you can just reach behind it. I'll go out to mine now to see if that's a possibility.

 

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. I'm thinking it might not be as easy as just reaching behind it. Which is no big deal. Have to look at it more once I get the SmartTap in.

 

I've been wanting one of these. Let us know how it works out.

I ordered the Smart-Tap setup along with LED bulbs for the front/rear turn signals (LED's are not required) for my personal truck however I'm over in Oregon right now for my day job so I won't be able to fiddle around with it until I'm back in Feb. Man I never knew I would miss my truck so bad - worse off I'm stuck driving a Frontier...

It has been brought to my attention that this unit will only work with Tacoma's that do not come equipped with DRL's - This unit only works with CF18 equipped vehicles. Tacoma's have two variations and the DRL uses a larger 12-pin relay.

 

I'm a licensed carpenter, so I have no idea what oxygen free wire is, but I assume it is used in high current applications to prevent combustion. I don't see any aruminiuminum on the wires, just the post connectors.

I bought the set from a member who bought from the GB, but backed out when it came time to do the install. You know, the potential ZAP! POOF! factor can be intimidating for some.

Soldering is pretty easy to do. Just grab some extra wire and practice. The hardest part when soldering wires in the truck is ensuring that you don't inadvertently touch another wire or plastic part with the soldering iron/gun tip.

As to the act of soldering, I think the best way to solder is to first, put a little solder on the soldering tip. Second, touch the wire with the soldering iron/gun, and 3rd, push the end of the solder into the wire. When the wire is hot enough, the solder will melt into the wire. Push in just enough solder to cover the wire joint and so all the strands are covered; and then you're done! If you're using heat shrink tube, don't forget to put that on before you twist the wires together...don't know how many times I forgot to do that.

On another topic....thanks for the link on the flasher module...that drives me nuts not having that feature.
