is it OK to drive with a different size spare?

I have upgraded my wheels but not my spare. The new ones are 32" OD and the the spare is the stock tie on a 17" wheel. Is it OK to use this spare if I got a flat? The outside diameters are different.

 

its fine in an emergency situation. iv seen a big ol f-250 with probably 35s and then one of the tires was probably a 32, looked funny but if need be it works

 

It should be fine as long as it's not for a long period of time.

 

Emergency situation only - if it is on the rear, the smaller tire will have to spin faster to keep up with the larger tire. I am in the same boat, but if I get a flat in the rear, I would put the spare on the front and put the front tire on the rear. You can put it on and limp somewhere to get it fixed. I just wouldnt drive at freeway speeds.

Just do not put it in 4 wheel drive! That could mess it up!

 

Find a used tire place and get a spare that is the right rim size for your spare rim and the right OD for your new tires.
No more concern and it's a cheap fix!!

 

Four wheel drive will burn up the front differential. I know this from experience. A new front diff for an '06 4WD is $2047 Canadian. Covered under warranty as they said a seal had gone. I suspect the seal went because the diff was so hot. The oil when it was dripping out was hissing on the wet pavement. That price does not include labour or fluid.

 

any problem fitting the bigger tire up in the spare tire hole? I hear its pretty tight.

DONT put it in 4wheel drive and dont drive far or fast and you will be safe and wont f up your transfer case

 

The largest tire that will fit under the bed in the spare location without modification is 265\70\17.

Fortunately it matches the four on the truck!!!

 

mine are 275/65r18. So no fit?

 

I dont think you can run a different size spare on 09+ in the rear. The new LSD will go crazy.

 

That size is 1/2" larger in diameter than what I have. On my truck there is no room between the hitch and the tire but my hitch is not a factory part. Being only slightly larger you would have to try it and see.
