If you watch This Mobtown Thread you might get lucky with a good deal. Not a group buy deal, but a good deal.

Last year, when I started modifying my truck, my original plan was an overland build. So I installed a full set of aluminum skids: IFS, Tranny, T-Case, Gas Tank, LCA, Diff.

Well, my first wheeling trip of the season was at the 2016 Toyota Takeover at Rausch Creek Off Road Park in PA. It was a fantastic trip full of boulders(large and small), washouts, water crossings, stumps, steep ledges and high angle off-camber turns. Over the course of 2016, I made several trips to RC. After the second trip here is what my aluminum skids looked like (they were straight when I installed):
    upload_2017-1-28_6-56-19.jpg

I highly suggest that you think about what type of wheeling you will be doing and where you will be doing it. I'm originally from the west coast (California/ Nevada/Washington) and the type of wheeling that I was used to was generally known as "overlanding." Wide open country with scenic trails along the way. This is where aluminum skids would actually excel.

Now I'm in NY. The northeast part of the country tends to have a different kind of wheeling. Less open country, with limited wheeling real estate. The terrain is very "different" and can run the gamut of rocks, water, mud,
deep holes and everything in-between. It's just "different." And lots of times it's "Pay to Play" like Rausch Creek, so they make the terrain intentionally challenging.

Even un-reinforced steel got some severe bashing and couldn't hold up.

Well, I'm feeling a lot more confident with my current skids:

I am retaining my aluminum LCA and Gas Tank skids, since they've taken limited hits so far. Diff Skid is steel, so we're OK in that area.

    Hope this helps.

Yes this is a great post and should get people to really think about how they use their vehicles. I've done this rough road glamping (i suppose it would equate to overland ) in the east for 10 years. I've got 3/16" steel skids on the Tundra. I don't visit pay to play parks and I've never been truly rock crawling. Yes those skids are scratched up pretty good but they are in no sense of the word bashed.

I chose aluminum skids for the Tacoma because of my past usage of the Tundra and the known future use of the Tacoma. Rough forest roads? Yes. Rock gardens? No thank you

Mine are purchased with the thought of protecting the the truck from that once in a while bump that happens.

There you have it. Two styles of truck usage. You ( the buyer of skids) just have to decide where along the line between these you fall.

Fumoto oil drain plug what is the part number for the 16-17 Tacoma? They only show for 16 with either the 4.0 or 2.7. I have the 3.5

Stiffeners still need to be welded on before they start shipping.
