Tires on my TRD pro

My KO2's do well on the highway, snow, rain, dirt... zero complaints here.

You could keep the stock tires and rims and just get another set of tires/rims for off-roading.

 

The problem is that more lift doesn't eliminate rub in almost all Tacoma cases. That's why guys with 3" of lift rub with 33s. They just don't fit with the cab mount and the size of the wheel well. You'll probably rub.

 

KO2's are a little louder than stock, don't buy the quiet as stock hype they aren't. Second they have been known to hydro plane as the tread is C shaped so it isn't set up well for water excavation.

If you want an aggressive tire those ridge grapplers I have heard good things about, also cooper st maxx are a favorite of mine, both of those are hybrids (between a mt and at tire).

Never understood going all out with the top off road model and super aggressive tires just to run around the street. See so many wranglers like that around here with rock bumpers and winches on 35+ inch mud tries and clean as a whistle under carriage. To each their own though

A little louder is no problem... From what I'm coming from it'll still be quiet!

I've heard the st Maxx is a great tire but that the atz p3 is made by the same company is basically the same tire.

So I'm still left in the same position - ko2 or atz p3 (basically St Maxx)?

 

So rad!!! What size do you have on the Tacoma? Experiencing any issues?

Another good tire is the Toyo Open Country AT2. I had a set on my 05 F350 SD Diesel and they ran very very smooth and last a long time, close to 50k and those were LT 35X12.50R20.

 

I have the KO2's as well (LT265/70R17) with no rubbing issues on my OR with no rubbing issues.

 

Thats not the 33" most people talk about. Yes those fit and i should have been more specific, but most people dont want the pizza cutter tires. Most want the 285-75-r16 and the 285-70-r17. Of which dont fit without rubbing.

 

How bad is the rub going to be? And how how much of a difference is the 285 75 16 vs the 265 75 16 on the performance of the vehicle? Only a little taller and heavier... Would they both have the same impact on the driving experience or would the 285s be significantly worse?

I have the 285/70/17 nitto Tera grappler g2's on my pro. I had to do some very MINOR trimming on the forward side of inner wheel well plastic. I get zero rub now even in reverse at full lock. My wheels are 17x8 with +5 offset. Hope this helps

 

No....Im correct. The 1" of lift changes nothing about the shape and clearance of the wheel well. Hence why people with a 3" lift still rub.

 

Its not going to be horrible depending on who you are. Also rim back spacing and tire brand/ model selection have an amount to do with it as well. If you drive around normally all the time you wont notice, but when you go to pull into a parking space or make tight turns then it will happen. If you go off-road it will happen more as the suspension gets compressed while you are turning. Again its a combination of several factors. I has 33's on my 1st gen with a lift and they rubbed during those situations. It was borderline annoying. Nothing worse then pulling in some place in front of a bunch of people and your sweet looking truck is grinding and popping.

You can mitigate by removing inner fender coverings and mud flaps, but I live in a salt state so for that reason that is out of the question for me.

And as for the difference, again it depends on tire brand for weight and such, but one is going to be about 1" taller and 3/4" wider. you'll notice it in terms of power loss, but they do look sweet.

 

of course it doesnt change the shape of the wheel well but it certainly changes the distances from your tires to the points where it would rub. It raises the vehicle away from the tires.

 

Do you know what the tires weigh? How is it off roading? How's the power?

It does change the distance, but not enough to even be considered as a change. If you sit and do some math for the gain in tire clearance where it rubs, its infinitesimally small because of how angles and arc relations work. The extra lift is for suspension travel on the pro, not co clear tires. If they wanted larger tires they would have moved the cab mounts back 1" That would do far more then a lift for clearance.
