Rear Diff fluid

Hey,

I have a 2008 4x4 V6 SR5 Tacoma and am planning on changing my rear diff oil in the next few days.

Right now I purchased 3 quarts of 75-W90 Royal Purple Gear oil with limited slip additive.

The owners manual recommends 80W-90, is the

$30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 with additive a better oil to use, or should I return it for 80W-90 and add the additive between the first and second quart?

75w90 is fine, not better or worse than 80w90 and surely good enough, especially since you are using a premium brand. Tons of us here on TW have used 75w90 without issues. Besides, there is virtually no difference in viscosity between 75w90 and 80w90.

 

75W90 is fine, but you don't need the limited slip additive unless you have a TRD Sport. BTW, welcome to TW!

I run 75W90 Redline GL-5 gear oil (which has limited slip additive) in my truck's transfer case and both axles and 75W90 MT90 GL-4 in my transmission.

 

Would using the oil with the limited slip additive cause problems if I don't need it?

 

How often do you usually change the diff fluid?

 

I'm only aware of two problems with having friction modifiers in gear oil when you don't need it. One is it's usually not compatible with manual transmissions and generally speaking will break down faster than gear lube without it.

 

Ok, I will go grab some without it.

I try to change it every 30 000 km but have gone a bit longer this time around.

 

I change mine every 60,000 miles with synthetic 75w90, but also my truck has a pretty easy life, nothing too severe.
If I were towing or hauling regularly, I would do 40,000 mile differential service. Mine is an open differential.

 

Lucas 85w140 here. This is recommended by ECGS

 

Lucas 75w90 here. No problems thus far.

 

When talking to 4wd parts about what weight to use, they said 85w/140 is what they use to break in the gears and afterwards its okay to use the thinner 75w/90. I wonder if ECGS is thinking along the same lines. ECGS warranties their stuff so of course they are gonna want the heavier stuff in as it offers more protection.

 

This is a perfect example: heavier weight oil does not necessarily mean more protection from wear. Often, thinner oils can provide superior film strength over heavier oils, it all depends on the performance of the oil, high load testing results, etc.

Ok so I returned the Royal Purple And picked up so motomaster 80W-90 GL 5 gear oil.

I'm a believer that you get what you pay for most of the time and this oil is only $7 a quart.

So unless I can find 80W-90 synthetic gear oil I'm probably going to get

$30 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 synthetic GL5 and use that.

 

Question regarding the LS additive and our differentials - are the only two diff options: open with locker, or a limited slip diff? Were there any 4x4 models produced with an open rear diff?

I have a 2007 base regular cab 4x4 MT and want to get the right stuff. Owner's manual of limited use as it applies to all models.

 

A 2007 base 4x4 would have an open diff. 2005 to 2008 TRD Sports have limited slip, TRD Off Roads had an electric locker.
