Has anyone researched the use of a GFI in an automotive application involving an inverter?

I notice quite a few posters struggling to find a square black receptacle, go to an appliance repair shop they are the same ones used as auxillary plugs on stove tops. To cut a square hole; I marked out square on console drilled 4 small holes in each corner of layout and used an oscillating tool (Dremel, Fein) to cut plastic between holes neat tidy.

I've seen a lot of posts for converting outlet to full time 400 watts but no one is questioning why toyota designed it to drop to 100w when in gear? Is this a safety/warranty issue? Has anyone burned their trek down yet?

Hi Everyone, I'd like to thank you all in advance for such great information. My truck would seriously suck without this forum. :)

I want to do the 400 W anytime mod, but I'd like the bed outlet to be hot all of the time (with truck turned off). I've read everything that I can on this subject and I found a link to a TTORA thread, but the link to the file showing how to do it is dead. I also found a TacomaWorld thread where people were doing this but it died out right when it was getting to what I wanted (people were doing the always hot mod but adding a 12V outlet, which I don't want to do because it is more involved). I just want my bed outlet hot with 400 W without keys in the ignition. Can anyone help me with this? If not I will be doing the mod from this thread soon, but wanted to check first in case this mod would make my other idea more difficult.

    Thanks again!!

Thanks. I was actually looking at that thread and thought that I needed more information... you made me look at it again and I think I understand everything now. I was unclear on the parts under the hood, but now I've got it (I think). So if I do the mod from that thread and the mod from this thread I can have 400 W while driving and without the key in the ignition. My question is, does the switch in the dash still turn on/off the inverter?

Thanks again, and sorry for diluting this thread with slightly off-topic questions.

Just in case anyone is interested, I have a MT and I followed the directions in the original post (cut and cap both ends of black/blue clutch wire, cut and cap both ends of purple/white wire, cut purple wire and ground the side leading to the inverter) and it worked flawlessly. After confirming that I could drive around with the 400 W light on, I followed the directions in the link from post #507 to rewire the switch and relay to be functional without the keys in the ignition (I used the dome light fuse). That too went well and everything seems to work great... only note is that if you have a TRD Off Road with the differential lock and fog light switches you have to take apart the dash to get behind the switch. Initially I worked the switch out from below (gaining access through the fuse panel) but the wires for the inverter switch are bundled together with the diff lock and fog lights so you can't pull it out far enough to get to the wires.

Once again, thanks to the TacomaWorld community for all of the great information!

In a bind and need some help. I realize this is an ac mod but I need to find D.C. Power in the same vicinity if possible. I have a dual USB DC plug I would like to use. Where can I tap into this?

If the input to that module requires 12Vdc then I believe your two closest choices are:
    - The DC input to the AC inverter module (it will be a very thick wire and might not be too easy to tap into)
    - The cigarette/accessory socket (you'd have to run a wire from the rear of the socket and under the gear shift cover to get to the armrest)

You could also use an add-a-fuse and run that wiring from behind the coin tray to your USB jack. The current draw would be less than 2A to the USB jack. If you don't want the USB jack turned on when the truck is off be sure to select a switched fuse location.

My first post, and I'm starting with a problem...hopefully someone can help.

I tapped the lime green wire for neutral, the red/white stripe wire for hot, and grounded the outlet per the original post. I also made the 400W anytime mod by cutting the inverter violet/white stripe wire and isolating both ends, and cut the solid violet wire and grounded the end remaining on the inverter connector. Now I cannot get the truck to start; have all instrument cluster lights on but no solenoid click in the start position. Any ideas what I may have screwed up?

Did you disconnect the battery while working? If not you may have power surged something. Start checking fuses.
