    Hey Tacoma World,

I am new to the Tacoma family. I bought a 2017 Tacoma and went with the "tried and true" 2.7l I4 engine. I get pretty frustrated when taking a hill or trying to accelerate on the top end as the power in my double cab SR5 is pretty disappointing. I have been reading that TRD discontinued the supercharger, which is a bummer, and I am wondering if anyone has taken their place?

If not, what are some additional ways to significantly increase power when taking a hill or give me a bit more power in the 80MPH range?

I appreciate any help, thank you!

AFE Cold air intake and LCE Engineering Header! Both got me a increase of 16hp and 15 torque combined. I got the dyno numbers to prove it!

I have the 2.7L 4X4 and fine it has more power than my older 06 2.7L.

That being said, drive the truck in S5 mode. 5th gear in the AT on the 4 cylinders is about the same gear ration as 5th gear in the manual transmission on the 4 Cylinders. In 5th, you will be able to accelerate better. The 4 cylinders actually have a better gear ratio in rear end and transmission setup. The V6 is geared way too high except the manuals, thus the reasons for all the drive-ability complaints.

Not that I do this much, but if I manually shift in S mode, starting at 2nd, and shift through to 5 doing so at about 3000 to 3600 rpm, the truck really accelerates well and hard. But normally I leave it in S4 around town and S5 on the highway. S mode will always downshift and upshift just like in drive, the gear you select is the limit of how high it will up-shift. So if it is in S4, you have a 4 speed automatic, S3 3-speed and so on.

But I also have the access cab, so the double cab is most likely heavier.

Welcome to the club as far as third gen power complaints go. The v6 lacks low end grunt and throttle response which is a different issue from the 4 cylinder but there is just as much demand for a turbo, tune or supercharger for the V6 as I've ever seen on any other modern vehicle

That is awesome! Sadly, I am in CA so everything for me has to be CARB (so stupid). Is the 16HP noticeable? If so, I will look into CARB air intake and headers. Anything to help on the hills!

Oh ya defiantly helps out on the hills for sure, and notice it starting out with my manual on a hill!

Anything you know of that is CARB? This is auto, all previous vehicles had been manual.

I don't think anything is CARB approved for the 2.7, if so, not much.

There was never a TRD supercharger for the 2.7 in second gens, either.

The 2015+ is dual vvti and has a little more power than previous models of 2.7L. since you're in nazifornia you have to keep the mods legal so youre stuck there as you said.

One thing about the 2.7L is it likes slower speeds. Figure this one out. Years ago I towed a trailer with a few hundred pounds from Seattle to Spokane in my old 2005 2.7L 5-speed reg cab 2wd. Going about 70-80 mph on I-90. Not fun and I was downshifting to 4th alot. Unloaded on the way back didn't perform that well either with an 850 pound trailer empty.

The SAME day I got back I used said trailer to pick up my 1000 pound ZTR mower from service locally.

I stayed at 60 mph and was able to handle a large hill in 4th easily. So it handled 1850 pounds at 60 mph better than it handled 850 at 75 also in 4th.

    Something like that....

Sadly, not much is legal here. Any insights as to what is? I'm sure K&N will come out with an intake sometime this year and LCE will probably make some headers. I am hoping that MAG will come out with a CARB charger.

You are right about that! My truck does great at 60-70MPH up a hill, but attempting to stay at 80MPH on any grade hill is upshift, downshift, upshift, downshift.
