I had a rear axle seal go out and when the tech took it out to install the new seal (200 miles from my tools) he found the bearing had to be replaced so I'm looking for tips on this. I read a few different stories of people replacing everything - seals, bearings, etc. and having the seal start leaking again.

The seal has started to leak already (truck has been parked except for moving around the block for street sweeping for a couple weeks now), and I'm not sure if it's because of the bad bearing, but I want to make sure when I get the new one installed to have it be the last time I need to mess with it for a very long time.

Gear oil all over the brake shoes and wheel is a time consuming problem so hopefully I can avoid it on this side of the axle (I know the other side will need the bearing replaced, but want to see how this one goes prior to getting too deep into this financially). I don't know whether to take the axle out myself (and have a machine shop press the new bearing on) or have a shop that will warranty their work do the whole thing.

    I ordered this kit:

And here's a thread I read about issues with the axle seals blowing out after they've been replaced: [IMG]

One thing - my truck is a 98 with an 01 TRD axle

Thanks for the good advice guys. I changed the thread title now that I've read about a bunch of problems with the seals going out after the bearing was replaced.

    Found some reading: https://www.yotatech.com/f2/rear-axel-seal-leaking-3rd-gen-4runner-39679/
