I have been collecting quotes for 2 months now and have started looking at Trucks on the lot. Does anyone have an idea of how much I should expect discounted off MSRP when buying off the lot?

Depends on which model you are buying.
Typical amount is $2500 off a MSRP but some people in this thread are getting 15-20% off MSRP which is $4000 off but those deals are pretty rare.

Aim to pay invoice for the truck with options. Tell the dealer you want to see the invoice sheet and you will pay that.

Do you *have* to buy off the lot?

As to your question, specifics will vary by location and possibly model. I'd expect you could achieve an OTD of invoice plus TTL.

I'd still do the mass email to a bunch of dealers for a quote to order the truck you want, and then take the lowest to whichever dealer has the matching config on the lot and see if they're willing to match it. If not, place the order with the place that gave you the low quote.

No, this just opens a big can of worms. The less opportunity you give the dealer to try spin stories of his price and losing money and all that the better.

Not to mention you do that and he'll zero in on an invoice number higher up on his invoice sheet as "his invoice" and now you're in a weak negotiating position. You said you'd pay invoice and there it is, but now you're reneging because for not wanting to pay the TDA or Dealer Fees or Put-The-Customer-Over-The-Barrel fee.

Keep it simple. All you care about is what you pay out the door. How he gets there doesn't matter.

Take the invoice prices from 3rd Gen Tacoma Model/Package/Option Costs Master List and figure out your local TTL to find your OTD target. Negotiate to that number.

Thanks, I am currently looking at an two different SR5's on two different dealers lots. Quote 2 is the truck i would like to have as it has the dark satin wheels and the other does not. Keep in mind that I have not conditioned quote 2 nearly as much as quote 1.

Quote 1: SR5 model# 7540 Options: V6 Tow, All weather liner & sill protectors, bed mat, exhaust tip, mudguards. MSRP = $34,942 and was quoted $32,920 (I know that invoice on this one is $32,234)

Quote 2: SR5 model# 7540 Options: V6 Tow, All weather liner & sill protectors, bed mat, exhaust tip. MSRP = $34,813 and was quoted $31,837 (Invoice for this $32,154)

I though that buying trucks off the lot could get you a significantly better deal? Was I wrong?

Fair enough. I paid the advertised internet price of $34,830 for mine and tried to get them to go lower but they didn't.
I didn't ask for their invoice sheet and didn't know what the invoice was on the truck when I bought it.
According to the master list I paid over $500 invoice for my truck.
This is only my second vehicle purchase. First was a lease so i have no expertise in negotiating.

I bought mine off the lot and only got $2k off MSRP. $36,742 MSRP and paid $34,830. I wanted my truck in blue initially and they found one at another dealership but I would have had to pay full MSRP for it.
You probably live in a region where there isn't monster deals like the southeast or you don't live in an urban area like Atlanta or Washington DC where there is massive competition between dealers.
Keep getting quotes from dealership within a 100 mile radius from you to see if you can get a lower price.

gpb, I have actually taken your advice from earlier thread replies and been negotiating based on OTD (excluding TTL). I only posted my pricing as discount from MSRP because that's how most people have been submitting pricing on this thread. I live in KC on the KS side and contacted 12 dealers from both KS and MO.

What was the lowest price you received after contacting 12 dealers?

The truck I wanted was SR5 model 7540, Dark Grey with V6 Tow as the only option.
    Invoice = $31,875
Best offers = $32,800ish (8 of the dealers claimed that they cannot come down in price as much when its built to order)

My goal OTD price is $32K + TTL. After visiting a few dealers I have found they are willing to reduce the prices on lot inventory much more. I could honestly give a crap about the exhaust tip, bed mat and mudguards but im getting a better deals even with the options.

Maybe that's why they don't want to come down more on the price because you wanted a naked/bare SR5 model with no options which gives the less play room around the invoice price. Dealerships want to maximize the holdback profit and if you buy a stripped down model that makes their holdback lower.
My truck came with these options with the invoice price
$32153 TRD off road auto trans
    $60 exhaust tip
    $139 all weather mats
    $579 towing package
    $579 tonneau cover
    $940 destination fee
I paid $34,830. So actually I got a pretty good deal base off the master list.

Cool. Sounds like you're on the right track.

I'd also suggest that you might see slightly better pricing if, when you're ready to pull the trigger, you mass-email all 12 dealers with everyone on the To: address line so they can see who all is in play. State (truthfully) that you'll pull the trigger "by the end of the weekend" or whatever with the best deal. I believe the two factors add a sense of urgency and that you're looking for Best-And-Final-Offers up front. Make it clear that you're quite willing to order and wait, this lets high volume dealers who maybe don't have the truck on the lot feel they have as good a shot as anyone if they can get you a good price.

Seriously, the ability to wait for an order is your best tactic to get the best offers out of them. It's the guys who are in a bind and have to buy whatever is available who have the lease negotiating power.

I ordered my truck through the dealer that gave me the best deal. I contacted 20-25 dealers within 3 hours with the exact specifications I was looking for. My selling price was $32,449 and I had to pay $571 for first months payment, tax and title as the "deposit" (I'm doing a lease but to give you an idea of my price). MSRP was $35,417. I also qualified for the Graduate Student rebate of $750. My truck configuration is as follows:

    2017 SR5 V6 4x4 DCSB
    Silver Sky Metallic
    Factory Tonneau cover
    Mud Guards
    All weather mats
    Wheel Locks
    Dark Satin Alloy rims
    D Rings
    Tow package

I think I might be over paying, I can't get the dealers to play ball in my area (Seattle). The best I can get on a dcsb TRD OF, tow package, weather mats, manual transmission is 36.5 otd. I'm still waiting on delivery, and this is the first new vehicle I'm buying. Not sure how you're getting these amazing deals. Tried the mass emailing and such too.

I think you can do better than $36.5k out the door.
I paid $37.2k out the door on a TRD off road auto trans with tow package, tonneau cover, all weather mats, and exhaust tip.

A manual version is $1500 cheaper and you don't have a tonneau cover as a configuration. I think your OTD price should be $34.8-35k tops. Granted you live in Seattle which has a high sales tax rate. I paid 5% sales tax in my state.

Quote 1 Just gave me $31,920. OTD

I'm thinking that I would pull the trigger since I have been shopping around for 2 months. I was going to ask for a itemized quote that is signed by the sales manager to avoid surprises.

Are you by chance a Costco member? If so, they have a decent auto program. I used that as leverage too.

I am not getting much luck in my area either. I am ordering a TRD OR DCSB 4x4 manual with the tow package, premium & tech, bed mat, D-rings, and cargo net which comes to a MSRP of $37,439 according to the Toyota website. I am working with a broker some coworkers of mine recommended, and the best price they can do is $36,728 which is before TTL. Sales tax here is expensive too. The ironic thing is I could get a better deal on the same configuration with an automatic because they are available on the lots. I guess placing an order is what screws me. But hey, at least I get exactly what I want.

Went to the dealer today. They have me at 37500 OTD on a super white TRD sport double cab with premium & tech, tonneau cover and tow package. Good deal?
