You should not have to special Order an Automatic, the lots are loaded with them. Hoping you find some new employment you enjoy, layoffs do suck!

If you take the time and do research on what you want and what you want to pay versus what the MSRP is, then you won't go wrong. It's normal and expected to do some haggling.

However there are people that don't haggle and don't like to haggle. Nothing wrong with that either.

Just don't go into a dealership without doing some homework. Dealers have the upper hand because they know the cars and trucks they sell inside and out. Knowledge of options and pricepoints will level the playing field.

Same thing goes for the finance department with all the add on warranties and stuff. Take time to read all the fine print always before you agree to anything. They throw so much at you that you have to study everything in detail.

It can be real work to haggle but it can save some money, especially in this economy.

Sometimes knowing what you don't want or need can be just as helpful as knowing what you want.

My "quote" is 1500 under MSRP 4x4 TRDORSB with Prem Tech

Am I being greedy for wanting more off?

A sales guy I talked to in socal said people pay MSRP or over all day, might be bs

But not sure I have much wiggle room

@TacosCarneAsada you should check out the dealerships further south. Toyota of Olympia hooked me up. 2017 TRD Sport 4x4 Double Cab, with premium and tech, tow pkg, predator tube steps, all weather floors mats, bed mat, mud flaps and stainless steel exhaust tip for 36800. MSRP was little over 39k. Sales tax is lower here too. I would check out Toyota of Olympia and I-5 Toyota in Chehalis. They are more willing to give you a deal.

I got about $1,000 below MSRP. Probably could have done better but it fell within the price I had decided I was willing to pay. I knew what I would pay, and when I would walk out the door. I'm sure the dealer did too because his "this is invoice, I can't go any lower" price was right at my number. Many people get much better discounts but put in a lot more effort. I'm happy with what I got.

It's not greedy at all. There's nothing wrong with wanting more than $1500. In fact going for 10% off isn't unreasonable. Try asking for a 20% off deal and see if they come back somewhere between 10-15% off. You might be surprised.

I think haggling works better if you aren't special ordering something. It works even better if they have several trucks of the same configuration on the lot already.

When I got my truck I knew going in that I didn't want a V6 and I didn't want to spend $30K. That was just my baseline requirements. They only had one truck on the lot that fit that profile and it happened to be a 2016. This was back in November when they were getting the 2017's.

I was really in the market for an SR model for $24K or so, but none of the dealerships I went to near me had them. I did try to get the SR5 to $25K but after going back and forth I found where the bottom of the deal was and it was something I could live with. Turns out I got more truck than I really wanted and paid just a little more than I wanted but I'm glad I got the deal I got.

I've heard that dealers don't make what you might think on a sale. However they do get credit and bonuses for volume of car sales.

There are places and other cultures that haggle over everything, like food and necessities. In the US we only do it on certain things like cars. It's kind of interesting when you think about it.

So do your best deal that works for you. Toyota is tough to get more than 10% off, they won't give their product away. This is why they maintain their resale value and have built up a loyal customer base.

A sales guy spouting BS? Naw, never happens. :D

I don't know SoCal market, others will need to tell you the realities.

I do know when I did my email-a-bunch-of-dealers some told me "nobody's discounting Tacomas" ... yet I had in hand a couple of quotes for $3000 below MSRP.

I'm looking at a 4x4 3.5 L sr dcsb. best price I have gotten so far is 30,900 with costco auto program. It's that a good price?

You should be able to do better than Costco pricing with a bit of work. That program is fine for those who can't negotiate, but it's by no means the best available pricing.

In September, I checked the Costco pricing then went about it my usual buying method (link in my prior post in this thread). I ended up paying about $1200 less out the door than the Costco price. At the same dealer. (I went back and gave them a chance to match the best quote I'd received from other dealers)

Cool good to know. I have already sent emails back to other dealers seeing if they could beat the price

MD area: 17 DCSB MT (7545) with Tow, mats, and Tonneau and delivery fee. $33719 before TTL. They They're quoting that invoice has gone up since that thread was started in the sticky (what I was using as my basis for negotiating) but I don't think I was much over invoice. $1824 below MSRP anyway. Tried tacking on $700 for the "Appearance Package" aka pinstriping. Had them drop that.

I remember in the late 1990's and early 2000's my dad started noticing that dealers weren't coming down from their prices much like they did in the older days. He mentioned that the best he could do was to negotiate for options. This seems to still be true for the most part.

It doesn't hurt dealers to give a little incentive to a buyer. After all cars nowadays cost more than houses used to.

That is really super cheap, you had to be in the upper $20s for final price in order to get OTD at 31 with Taxes and fees, nice score!
