Fender flares removed

I saw a thread from 2013 where someone took there flares off and put clips in place.. so I decided to give it a try on my 1st gen. I feel it turned out well, only thing that bothered me was the line in the paint from where the flares where, but I feel it came out well.
I work at a dealership in the wash bay, so I might try and see if one of the guys who works with me can buff the line out sometime soon.

 

Looks good! Can you share what clips you purchased and where? I bought some a few weeks ago and was planning to color match them only to find out that they're too small.

 

I used all red clips, but you could use all blue if you wanted it's your preference. Here's the link to the clips (

Also used (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FSY2C2C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) these are the washers I used for the project. The clips were a smooth surface after I dremeled them down, so I did not have to use bondo to fill in any holes.

 

Thanks. For some reason I thought you used clips with flat tops already and not the actual fender flare clips that have to be shaved down. Guess I'll have to do it this way as well.

I remember those...sports cars (or any car really) should come with no front license plate holes.

Yeah, I'm still deciding if I want to do this or if I should throw my flares back on...we'll see.

 

I figured I could go with this option for right now. I personally like the look, but later on down the road I might just paint the fenders and throw em back on. On the plus side, it gives me a "wider stance" lol.

 

What is the reason people take off the flares? Do the fade or crack bad? I was wanting to install some bushwacker flares but i see so many people take the flares off.

 

The reason I took mine off was because they were fading constantly and I would have to keep putting products on them to turn them back to black. So.. I decided just to take them off so I wouldn't have to worry about them anymore.

 

Oh okay thanks. Oh well have you tried taking a hair blower to it? I dont want to pay almost 500 for something thats gonna fade a lot. My brother had a jeep and it faded bad on the black plastic fenders and he tried many products. The only thing that worked was taking a hair blowr to it. Just have to be very careful when doing it

 

I've always heard that people use a heat gun to fix trim on their trucks, but I just took them off so I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. It's all up to you on if you wanna buy those flares, I'm sure there are plenty of people on here that have bought the bushwacker flares. Maybe someone will chime in and help you to see if they fade

 

some use bedliner in a can, stays black, think I might go this route unless I feel like painting to color match.

 

I personally like the look with or without flares. On the trail, it's one less part to worry about ripping off. In fact, on a previous trail run, out of 3 trucks I was the only one that didn't scrape up my flare on one of the tighter obstacles simply cause I didn't have it on. My bro in law in his 3rd gen 4runner scraped up his flare and it was pushed in enough to affect his rear door. He wasn't able to open it till he pulled the flare off.

 

Yeah heat gun was what i was thinking that might be what he used instead of a hair blower.

 

@Fernando on here did a really good job on his.

I believe he took them off. Roughed them up, Bedlinered them and rattle canned them black. They came out really nice.
