Idiot with Audio

I'm looking to put this sub/amp combo in my taco.

Though beyond knowing that is a decent combo for a just little more power and kick to the kenwood speakers I installed, plug & play was idiot proof for me , I'm not sure what I need for an install.

Found this on Amazon, but I'm not sure if that's exactly what I need.

Asked my brother what I would need, and he just sent me a screenshot of this with no explanation. So I'm at a loss. With install I hope I can find a youtube video!

The screen shot he sent you is to be able to hook the sub up with rca cables. It makes it easier to hook the sub up to a factory head unit. You tap into your speaker wires from the radio, then plug the rca into it and run the other end to the sub. This gives the sub the radio signal. Then all you need is to give it power and ground it.

 

Wiring is included in the box. Shouldn't need the install kit.

 

Big if, but if you believe the Crutchfield description, it says it accepts speaker level inputs, so you don't need the LOC (your 3rd link). As mentioned above, power wiring is also supposed to be included, so you shouldn't need the wiring install kit either.

What I would suggest is that you get plug-in harnesses, so you can do all your soldering/crimping in the comfort of your home, rather than squished into the dash. It does do speaker level inputs; that's what the included wiring uses. (2) 10 pin connector and (3) speaker cord, are included in the box. They're 16' and 14' long respectively










tl;dr
most everything is included in the box to install except maybe some connections to get into the fuse box.

 

I'm going to be doing this exact thing soon myself. The only part I'm still unsure of is the power wiring. In another thread I asked about it and was shown some pictures of running the power directly from the battery, through the firewall in the passengers side, to the sub. But in that diagram above it looks like it's wired directly into a fuse box? How does that work? Seems way easier than running a wire through the firewall?

 

You should be fine with that amp wiring kit as you are not pushing alot of power with that sub/amp combo.

The 2nd link is an "line out converter", your factory head unit does not have RCA output interfaces on the back, so you will need that LOC so you can have RCAs to plug into the amp.

To install it you will need to tap into one of your speakers wires, + & -, you can find wiring diagrams with a google search to find the colors and locations of your speaker wires.

Running the power from the engine bay to the amp, and removing the HU will be the most difficult part of the install.

 

Aaah, apologies for the poor advice. The unit the OP wants (and maybe yours) only has a 10A fuse, so doesn't need much juice (or crazy thick power cable). So skip the firewall and go straight from the fuse box inside the cab.

 

Hahaha, Wow i did not realize this thing was running so little power that you can use an 18 gauge wire for power!

 

I'm planning on getting the exact same sub. Is there a suggested fuse to use for the power and also for the blue/white switched power?

 

I think I saw that after some more digging, but was still unsure as the install kit was something paired with the sub as an option on Amazon.

I don't have the tech package, so non-jbl isn't an issue. I do have the premium etune headunit in there though.
I like the idea of a plug and play harness. What ever makes it easier for me.



Thank you for the advice everyone! Will hopefully get this figured out soon, just ordered the sub today. I might try to catch my brother when he's eventually home and try to make him help me so I don't fuck anything up, haha.

 

OP, I just installed mine today. If you get the Kenwood unit you won't need the amp install kit. The only extras I needed were two add a circuits, a couple extra fuses for the add a circuits, and a positaps kit. I'll post some pictures later but I connected the main power to the power outlet fuse and connected the blue/white switched wire to the washer fuse. I fit the sub under the drivers seat and routed all the wires under the the plastic door sill and kick panel.

You didn't say if you're connecting to the factory radio or an aftermarket headunit but connecting my pioneer to the Kenwood was very easy.

The sound improvement is definitely worth the price! Especially if you get it from Amazon. The same unti is $250 on Crutchfield, don't know why there's a $100 price difference?
