Is there any way to add a second battery without having to buy a 900 dollar kit?

Yes, my kits are expensive but I promise Im not becoming a millionaire off of them.

Almost 300 of that price tag is the relay itself. The Blue Sea ML-ACR is the most robust, reliable, smart relay on the market. Id be happy to tell you all about it if youre interested.

Another couple hundred comes from the custom cut aluminum trays and machined tiedowns. Please think about this when considering other kits vs. the cost of mine. Nobody else provides trays with their systems. Its something you'll have to buy separately or fab yourself.

And to cap it off... All the cables are pre terminated at the correct length, allowing for a 100% bolt-in kit. No relocating, cutting, splicing, drilling, or permanent modification to the truck is necessary.

Last but not least.... I have stuff for every price point. If you are more of a DIY guy, Id be happy to hook you up with all the stuff you need to get the job done for significantly less than the premade kit costs.

Let me know if I can help. Otherwise, carry-on folks! Great discussion here.

Is there a manual alternative to the blue sea?

    Yes sir!

Here is a $27 crimper that worked fantastically for me for a couple years before upgrading to a pro model.

I was looking at these systems and would appreciate your opinion on why the ML-ACR is better than the CTEK Multi US 25000 (http://smartercharger.com/products/batterychargers/ctek-multi-us-25000/)

The item you linked to is simply a battery charger... like one you plug in to the wall to charge your batteries at home. The closest product that CTEK makes that can accomplish the duties of managing two battery banks is this one:
    http://smartercharger.com/products/dcdc/ctek-d250s-dual/

At first glance, the CTEK seems like a great product. It offers a smart relay, DC to DC charger, and solar charge controller all in one. The website does not say how many amps the unit is rated for. Nor does it say if it is capable of transferring enough power to winch from both batteries at once. It does say that is has a two year guarantee.

The ML-ACR is a dual voltage sensing, smart relay. Same as the CTEK. It is rated for 500 amps continuous duty... more than you could ever throw at it. It is fully sealed and marine grade. It is fully capable of handling jump starting and winching. It is Made in the USA and has a lifetime warranty.

The ML-ACR wins for me. If you need solar, it can be easily added with a 30 dollar charge controller.
