Not worried about leaving it running now that I understand that truck won't automatically shut off after a predetermined time that fob is away as much as I am wondering WTF you do if you lose the fob while working/hunting/fishing or just fuggin lose the damn thing.

Yes you can unlock doors with an actual key but how to start w no fob present?? At least w an actual key I can do like I have done for the last 20 years, a spare in the wallet and another in magnetic box under bed rail.

Yes I am a key whore!!

An actual transponder key is pretty damn big these days. Not sure how you're fitting that into a wallet...I dont even think one would fit in a magnetic hide a key... Speaking of wallets, there is actually a Lexus credit card sized fob that you can program and use with the keyless entry Tacoma!

    Yes, I'm anti-key!!

Yea, GM keys of that era are pretty small and relatively flat. The Keyed Tacoma has the buttons built into the key. It's rather large. Even my Last Toyota transponder key with a separate remote (4Runner) was way too big for a wallet. They are very thick.

Don't be surprised if they keep doing that. There've been a bunch of high end cars stolen here by thieves who swap fobs on a test drive.

That is pretty clever, although I can't imagine them getting away with it in the end in this day and age.

At the same time, doing the same thing with a key wouldn't be that much different...?

Thank you for your analysis of starting a vehicle , I would have been lost without it

The issue is I have to use a key in the door to lock my vehicle when it's running. In Canada this matters. The FOB won't lock the doors. There is no reason for this at all.

Glad I could be of service. You seem like the type of guy who might need to print this out and keep it in the visor, ya know, just in case...

I suspect it's more a matter of the vehicles they want come with smartkeys than it is them choosing smartkey enabled vehicles. We have a bunch of smaller used car places that may not have as sophisticated key security as the big dealers. Still, the moment someone lets down their guard there one goes.

It doesn't take long for a car/truck to end up in a cargo container and in a short time it's in Savannah and on a ship overseas.

I've personally reset my truck's smartkey ECU and re-coded a used key (plus my original two) to it; no reason thieves can do the same thing and code it to a couple used from ebay fobs. I'm sure there are buyers in developing countries where the process of importing an undocumented vehicle might be a bit "easier" for someone with silver to grease palms.

Pain to do if you start/stop, get out, walk 50-100' feet from truck do 1-5 minutes worth of work, walk back to truck drive a half block and repeat. Starters can get warm!!

    Gpb got me lined out.

I get the perks & agree with most the posts. But if it's a "smart" key and the fob has to be near to start, why can't it shut down when the fob is a set amount of feet away?
