yes. I know Tacomas tick. Sometimes during idle it sounds like something is making a chirping noise (not the fuel injectors ticking away) and it's right beneath the drivers side door. I have taken it places and they say it sounds normal. The problem is it's not consistent so it won't make the noise when I'm at places. it also makes a flutter noise when I'm accelerating. Also. My truck it's a 4.0 v6 manual 6 speed. Any ideas what this could be?

I know you say it sounds like its by the driver side door, but instantly my mind goes to either a pulley chirp or belt chirp (Serpentine belt or idler pulley, alternator pulley, water pump pulley, etc).

Sounds can be very deceiving on their true location, they like to echo and trick you. If it were me, I'd investigate the whole belt/pulley setup up front and see if you can either confirm or eliminate that as a source.

If you're still on the 2009 you may want to check out THIS LINK on TW. Further down the page is a PDF link for a clutch bearing noise issue on 2005-2011 FJs and Tacomas. I had this done on my 2011 as part of the TSB. It's described as a clutch bearing squeak or rattle noise.

Just a shot in the dark.

Did the noise stop after you replaced the clutch bearing. And wouldn't it be constant every time you are stoped and at an idle? Mine makes the noise at completely random times which makes it really hard to figure out what it is.

For example when I'm in neutral with the truck just sitting there.

Honestly the fix was done before I really started hearing the noise. I might have noticed the chirping right before they did the fix, and it was at idle, in neutral, with the clutch out. But at any rate you should probably see if the TSB applies to you or if it's already done. Note it's not bearing failure necessarily, but noise generated from it slapping around...

I hate noises where I can't figure out the source!

My vote is on the throw out bearing on the clutch if it's chirping.

Old thread I know. But I am having same issue. Faint chirp at idle. Like when sitting in the drive thru, I hear it. If I rest my foot on the clutch (6speed) it goes away, as well as when clutch is depressed. I concluded it much be a bearing in the clutch assembly. Throw out bearing? Only happens when clutch is NOT depressed. Noticed it at slow cruise @≈2k rpm in town. Does this have anything to do with clutch wearing out? Like the squeakers on your brake pads? Or is it just a dry bearing, in the case of bearing TSB? 2014 Tacoma 4.0l 6-speed. Access Cab. Any help is appreciated.

Yeah it's the throwout bearing chirp, it's a common issue for Tacomas. My 1st gen does it, well it did do it for a long time but hasn't in awhile. Comes and goes, usually it's really bad on hot days or after the truck has been running for awhile. Goes silent if you put any kind of pressure of the clutch pedal.

URD makes an aftermarket throwout bearing sleeve or something like that but I've heard it doesn't always work. Other than that, it's an issue that no one has really solved. A new throwout bearing keeps it quiet for awhile but it always comes back (at least it has for me). And in order to get to the throwout bearing you have to drop the trans and take the clutch apart so it's not like that's an easy task.

I just live with it, it's rare for a throwout bearing to fail on these trucks. The chirp is annoying though

Okay. This is exactly my issue. First hot day this year, it’s chirping loud enough today where I searched it and found this. I’ve since read a few more threads on it. Thank you for the prompt response.

    Ticking noise? Normal

you hear it clearly when you’re in a drive through since your windows are down, radio is turned down, and noise echo’s off the wall of the establishment.

I have a 2014 auto and just started getting the same chirp. At about .5 rpm when sitting at idle, but goes away with any throttle. Did you figure yours out?

If you have an auto you should check belts and pulleys. The chirp discussed here is the manual trans pilot bearing.
