If you make all your shifts at exactly 775RPMS, your fuel mileage goes up up UP!

If you are not sure when to shift then you should of got an automatic. I can't believe you even had to ask this question.

This thread got me laughing. When more power needed lower gear when more speed needed higher gear. My god what did people do in the old civics and s10s and other cars without a tach. Know thise manuals didnt come woth driving instructions. And whoever thinks 30+mpg is possible in a tacoma owes me a new computer keyboard as i spit out my coffee when i read this. 30 kilometers per gallon maybe

Sorry not buying it for one second. Maybe on a rare downhill trip in the right conditions but theres no chance you can consistantly turn 30mpg in a tacoma reguardless of vehicle configuration and driving style. If i try i can get about 20-22mpg max. Maybe 23 with premium and ideal conditions. Not a lot of roads to cruise right around 50mph around me though which seems to be the sweet spot

Well, let's see them. My best tank so far was 17.6 mpg, and I had to drive like a grandma to do it.

Coasting downhill from the gas station doesn't count. Anyone can hit 30+ mpg momentarily.

You say it can't be done, I prove with pics it can, and you're still calling bs. Okay well I'm going to continue enjoying my truck, enjoy your 16mpg.

Yup...notice how his fuel indicator is maxed out in the photo.

I do get better than 17.6MPG. I'm at 19.5MPG on my current tank. Yesterday I got my best MPG on my commute home yet - 24 MPG. That's a mix of city/highway and about 23 miles, including hills on the highway. But I also hit nearly all the green lights on the way to the highway - I'm learning the patterns more and if I drive slightly under the limit it's actually better.

So you're saying you can get over 600 miles on a single tank of gas? Then prove it. Show a pic of the Eco screen showing your overall gas mileage. Or how about a shot of the trip summary screen?

 couldn't find a facepalm emoji. 30 mpg instantaneous is indeed pretty easy in 5th or 6th gear at 40 to 45mph CRUISE (not accelerating). I never claimed a tank average could be that. If you don't have to stop or climb hills....you can go miles getting 30mpg that way. The trip econ readout on the entune unit is very useful.

By the way, those claiming that this is a dumb question and that they wondered how the old civics and whatnot were able to be driven.... It use to be common place for companies to put recommended shift points in the manual or even an economy shift indicator on the dash. It's at least as good a question as the to hundreds of "how much lift do I need" or "what's the best tire" posts here.

Exactly. Thank you. Some people around here like to post instantaneous numbers and claim they get that all day long.

PS Facepalm is this one:

I just replaced my original clutch (after "smoking it down to a pizza cutter") after just 108K... I previously was exceeding ~3K in 1st and 2nd. Now with the replacement, I am much more starting from stopped alot more like grandma... hoping to get closer to 250K with this second clutch... and added perk, based on some posts here, I should realize a bit more fuel efficiency (above/beyond the 17.5-18.0 mpg i was getting from one topped off tank to the next)... thanks for the genuine contributing posts!!!!

This is it^. Ive had it about 8 months and I've changed how I shift a few times. Though now am able to get into 6th on 40 mph street and improving my MPG. Also I (downshift everytime) now, doesnt waste fuel and keeps the pickup from feeling really loose. When you get good 3rd thru 6th work the pedal and shifter fast/quick and truck will barley even hiccup. My 1st and 2nd is alittle clunky, when its cold I dont slam it into second, just ease it in lol...

Its hot now and AC is going and that changes things too.

1-2 close to 3k...shouldnt need to go over 3k unless your climbing, also try to Rev match for downshifting

    1. Hi All!
    2. I know this is a 3rd gen discussion, but even if my info doesn't exactly correlate with your 3rd gen, hopefully the link will help anyways:)
      I have a 2009 4.0 DoubleCab ShortBox 6 speed MT
I live at 2200 feet above sea level
I use Shell V Power ZERO Ethanol 91 octane gas
All fluids are synthetic and I grease my zerks and clean my MAF sensor every 6 months with oil change
I am lifted 3 inches and have P rated 285/70/17 Firestone Destinations in the summer and P rated 285/70/17 Blizzak DM-V1s in the winter
Tires are set at 29 psi
The truck has 94,000kms on it (58,750mi)

I have journal-ed my driving habits/air pressure/trip conditions/shift points/etc in an Excel sheet since new. While this is not scientific, it has proven to be useful in showing trends in mpg for driving/shifting/speed/similarities over the last ten years. I've installed a vacuum gauge in the truck and drove for vacuum values. I've driven for RPMs. I've driven for slow acceleration and fast acceleration. I've driven in third gear at 60kph (37.5mph) in the city and fifth gear at the same speed over periods of time. I've done the same at highway speeds (5th vs 6th) and 100kph (62.5mpg), 110kph (68.75mph) and 120kph (75mph).

Most recently, I watched a video on shifting gears and fuel economy by Engineering Explained on YouTube and tried his method.

    3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNspNdVkslA

I am now shifting at 2200rpm in first and 2000rpm each shift after until I reach city speeds in 5th. I am accelerating at "traffic speed"; meaning: fast enough not to hold anyone behind me up, but not fast, by any means.

Prior to this I was trying another persons suggestion, which was to accelerate "quickly" to get into higher gears faster and supposedly keep the engine in a more efficient part of the power band. I was averaging 17.5-19 IMP MPG (14.4-15.6 US MPG) with 50/50 mixed driving. Now, with the above mentioned driving style I am averaging 22-23.2 IMP MPG 50/50 mixed driving and my three best 100 % highway numbers have been 26 IMP MPG (21.4 US MPG) on a trip in June, 26.8 IMP MPG (22 US MPG) on a trip in February and 26.9 IMP MPG (22.1 US MPG) on a trip in July with a ton of 23-25(18.5-20.5) numbers consistently.

In MY experience, the 6 speed manual gives the best MPG by accelerating moderately and shifting at 2000 rpm and running in 5th in city driving situations. On the highway, my best numbers were driving at 110kph (68.75mph) in 6th at 2200rpm.

I'm really happy with my numbers, especially lifted on 33s (32.9s)!!!

I have ordered OVTune and Matt says it will be here in the next two days. I'm interested to see if these numbers can be improved with the new tune and torque curve.

      Cross my fingers!!

      Cheers!!

      Barrett
