Which is a total bummer because it would be sooooo nice if it did work out, toyota blew it with entune. It works fine for music and phone calls over Bluetooth, but that's it. Really wish it could do text messages with an iPhone, that would be fantastic.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
And mine. But to send one, you have to press and hold the phone button, and dictate to Siri...

I would like to believe that someone, somewhere is working on this, if not someone in this thread. Entune is spread among ALL of Toyota and Lexus. Someone will hack it, and we will have a Google and/or an Apple solution.

So, who wants to send them their money and be a guinea pig for the Tacoma? :sawzall:

As an update to the above posts, I have e-mailed the company that does the Android System add-on for the Tundra ENTUNE system in the video above. They are looking into it to see if it is possible for it to work on the Tacoma.... If it is, 499 Euros (about $540 US) is what it costs, but it would be a full android system integrated into the stock ENTUNE head unit without any cutting or splicing. Anybody know if there are any drastic differences between the two systems?

Edit:I am referring to the differences between the two Toyota ENTUNE systems. If there is no fundamental differences, then I think this should work on the Tacoma

Big differences, what that company is doing is basically adding a tablet (without a screen) inbetween the display and headunit. That's why you have to hold the screen for 3 seconds, it detects that press then cuts off the OEM headunit and displays the Android tablet instead. So you are basically running a complete android tablet just using the stock screen. Just like using your home TV to switch between DVD player & Cable Box. Nothing will be integrated with each other.
Apply car play is just like entune, where you will have supported apps running between your phone and head unit but displaying on the head unit. The only difference between apple car play and entune is apple car play has way more supported (and better) apps. But how it all works and interacts with each other from the user perspective is basically the same.

LOL, thanks for the explanation, but I understood all that already, I was referring to the difference between the Tundra ENTUNE and the Tacoma ENTUNE. :)

Also, I wonder how they get the Entune screen to control the Android system without any cutting/splicing of the factory head unit.

All very good points, I would add however that Entune has an advantage at present in being wireless between the phone and headunit.

I've had CarPlay in rental cars when on business travel. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging the phone when you're making stops on your way somewhere gets really annoying really quickly. While wireless CarPlay is supposed to be making its way out, it's extremely rare so far.

By contrast, with Entune you have no wires needed for the apps to get their data through the phone. Don't even have to take your phone out of your pocket.

This mod, if applicable to the Tacoma, would remove almost all of the gripes people have with the ENTUNE system. You would have google maps, or any other android navigation at your fingertips.

Aftermarket headunits and integration kits with support for CarPlay, Android Auto, etc. already exist for 2016+ Tacomas yet people complain.

No reason to think adding another option to the existing mix would change that.

Except you can't control the phone from ENTUNE with the other current options, which means a ticket in states like Vermont. Any handheld device use is against the law. Plus, all of the options in your link are $900 plus, and most people don't like replacing an entire headunit from their new vehicle.

If you get in a wreck and are typing a text message out on your head unit, you'll still be breaking that law.

I agree, but I'm not talking about texting while driving, or anything similar to that. I am simply saying that this would be a good option for those who like the current head unit for everything but destination search, navigation, and even Pandora (my ENTUNE has been glitchy connecting to Pandora since day one)/IHeartRadio integration. Spotify, my wife's favorite streaming program, isn't available on the current head unit either, and this mod would fix that, as well as open the door to other music player options. If you don't want this as an option, don't read the thread.

    Not arguing mods.

    You just referenced this..
.. and the same statement applies to anybody using the head unit for phone mirroring. By your post, people would be under the impression that it is different -so I was clarifying. It's the same ticket regardless.

Do what you want. Maybe be a little less sensitive and a little more clear with your posts and then they won't sound like misinformation. ;)

You *completely* missed the point I was making which was that people will continue to complain even when options exist that'd solve their issues.

Since the updates a few weeks ago Pandora has been quite solid for me; iphone7 on iOS10. As for Spotify, play it over BT audio. Skip/pause/Back-skip should all work from the steering wheel controls. If you *have* to adjust something on the phone don't do so with a cop sitting next to you.

You do realize you're the one jacking an Android option into someone else's CarPlay thread, right? This is a discussion forum. Consider not posting if you can't handle people expressing opinions different from yours.

Fair enough. I apologize for missing your point, and for thread jacking. Please carry on, and if anyone would like me to update them on the Android system add-on, please send me a PM.
