I have a 2016 trd sport 4x4. I want to eventually get a rear locker. So arb or Detroit? pros and cons of both? Thanks much!

    ARB ftw.

Eaton designed the OEM Locker for Tacomas if I'm not mistaken. And to be honest, I've had two first gens with oem lockers, both have failed me. There's quite a few members on multiple Tacoma forums where the OEM locker crapped out on them.

isn't detroit always locked, not selectable? ARB is selectable. that's what I thought...

Yeah, the Easton Detroit locker is a full-time "lunchbox" locker.

The full time Detroit locker is much cheaper than the selectable ARB and for good reason...the ARB you can turn on/off. The Detroit engages/disengages on it's own depending on when it senses that you need traction, then it locks. That can obviously pose some potential problems for you if you drive your truck on city streets/highways, especially in bad weather. I had a full-time locker in my last truck and it was temperamental at times especially when taking turns on slick streets, but overall it was manageable. If you can afford a selectable ARB locker, then I'd go that route.

I'd go ARB for the reasons previously mentioned.

I have daily driven with my Detroit locker for 2 years now. I grenaded my rear end one time with it but that was from trail damage and eastons failure on lock tight during assembly (replaced under warranty). Other than that I have not had an issue with it. Don't drive like an ass and you will only notice it's back there in certain parking lots when a tire chirps. I also have an ARB in the front and it has some what failed me to. The air hose line got pinched which caused the locker to not engage (avoidable incident thought).

Another thing to think about on arb is on board air to engage it. Might as well get the big compressor so you can air up tires as well as engage your locker. (another major expense)

Do you want a wheeler or a daily driver? It's that simple a Detroit locks up every time you hit the throttle, doesn't matter if you need it or not, and an ARB locks up most of the time you hit the switch.

If you're dedicated to trails get the Detroit and you'll never have to worry about burning, pinching, or snagging an air line; if it's your daily driver and you just want to do some trails but still want it to have good road manners then get the ARB. Most of the people on this board are better served with having the ARB.

ARB lockers are the cream of the crop. I run Detroit's in all of my toys. Never have they failed, and you do have to drive easy on the streets with them. Here are just a few of my toys with the Detroit locker.

correct, it can and will likely affect driveability in certain situations, maybe badly. then again, a true locker is only useful in very specific situations also.

my choice would be a Positraction diff... i know it's not for everyone in the Tacoma world, but I'm not off road very often, so I'd like predictable 2 wheel drive in the rear (instead of one-legging) especially on wet roads when this truck needs the help. i spin my rear drive wheel daily and it's annoying. it will be worse when the OV tune is installed. for big power in the future, if possible, this is almost a requirement for me... i personally would not get a SC or turbo or whatever if there was no Posi available. either way, the one-legging commute thing drives me nuts coming from AWD all these years.

    three things:
1 - yeah a Posi, even the HD one, is not a true locker when you need it fully locked, so it's not a choice for off roaders really.
2 - it's not an available part yet for the MT's with the 8.75 rear yet. that should show up in the next 2-3 years.
3 - auto LSD is nice but it's strictly a low speed solution and does nothing for the one-legging issue.
