It's funny. I walked into the dealership and first thing I mentioned was.

"I posted my problem and most of the TW members pointed out it could be the sensor"

    They gave me their usual..

"We have our own database that we go through to find out, we will let you know what it is"

3 hours late I came back and they were like

    "You were spot on"

Thank you OP, conclusions are very nice. Where and when was you truck built? Mine was built in august of 2016, just an sr5 model. Hope they got a better batch of sensors for the trucksame built that month in Baja.

Ok- good advice- gonna replace mine myself- Nov 2015 build date-

For all the negative things, let's all agree that TW is really useful and worth every penny we spend to belong ( oh yeah, it's free- thanks tcbob!)

Good idea to be ahead of the issue, l recall a Tech posting photos of how the suspect ones look versus the updated ones, think it had some grid markings

If l can locate it l will, it is in one of the failed CPS Threads. Toyota did the redesign and then put that grid pattern so you could tell by looking at it.

Can we all just agree on 2 things here?

1-The first 2 years of 2nd gens were shit! I own one that was clearly taken care of before i bought it.

2- its now 3rd genners Lime Light!

Seriously though a 3.5 with a spaghetti tranny. Come on toyota fix this.

You've been keeping track, how many documented have failed in the 10's of thousands that have been sold.

Should be able to establish an approximate percentage to distinguish the difference between "when" and "if" qualifiers, pretty sure that value is less than 1%.

If you own an early truck, carry a spare for piece of mind but i'm not subscribing a suggestion that every early version of the CPS part will fail prematurely.

no problems with my truck- and I believe many others are also trouble free- just need my truck as a daily driver and will spend $100 out of pocket since there seems to be some bad CPS sensors from the early production- not necessarily blaming Toyota since it was a supplier.
I do not hate the engine trans in mine- it gets me where I need to go and back. My situational awareness is different from some here since I drove a 97 Dakota for 19 years before the 2016 Taco- big improvement would be an understatement.
Not discounting anyone, including OP who have issues. Just think my new truck is pretty damn good, fwiw....

The transmission is an ecu problem. The split second you let pressure off of the gas pedal, the transmission up shifts to a gear to cruise at that speed. If you need to put your foot down on the gas again it will need to down shift at least one gear if not 2. Depending on where it's at, sometimes it will up shift immediately after down shifting. Happens a lot if you push the gas pedal and left off repeatedly in a short period of time, like in slow moving traffic on the freeway.

They do seem to fail mostly in the hot weather from what we learned, it is an obvious weak point or Toyota would not have redesigned the sensor, are 100% going to fail, no but it would not hurt to change it out or carry a spare if you venture off the beaten path.

True. All Gens have their bugs.. I don't mind the 3.5 with the ECT active.. The 2nd gen miles per gallon was garbage tho.

Thank you. Once I get the truck back I will upload the receipt.

So everyone can reference a part number etc.

It's funny the service agent also said

That they have alerted "toyota" about the problem.

I'm assuming not just the local dealer but someone in toyota that checks for these type of things.

Because when I did come back he explained that after that initial call with "Toyota", they were ordered or advised to keep some sensors on hand and to order more just in case.

That's why my truck is going to take a day or two because they carried none at the dealer.

Op, According to the other thread there maybe issues with catalytic converter. Especially if you drove it in limp mode as you stated.
