Recommendation for LED Head Light Bulbs for 2017 TRD PRO

Any recommendations for LED head light bulbs for a 2017 TRD PRO. Thanks in advance.

 

Welcome, I am new as well. After a decent amount of research I settled on the H11 OPT7 bulbs. I bought them on Amazon for $99 but you can get them cheaper from the companies ebay page (I found that out after the fact). I am very happy with them

 

I have a 2016 TRD Sport.

I tried the OPT7, Hella, ATShark, and a no-name brand set of LED bulbs in my headlights.

They all put out cool/blue light but were all dimmer looking than the stock halogens.

I went with the TRS HID kit and it puts out a ton more light than stock at a tint that I actually like (5500k)

I wouldn't bother with LED headlights yet.

Left is stock for comparison. Seem brighter at night due to color maybe. I run with Ridgid fogs on, LED, why not?

 

I went the MostPlus LEDs. There was another thread where a guy compared both the Opt 7s and MostPlus and he said they basically look the same but cost was a lot cheaper for the MostPlus.

I had a set of Opt7's installed for 2 days.. The light output is a joke.

Currently have DDM Tuning 35w HIDs installed and am very happy

 

Led does not project as far but projects wider. I had some and switched back to halogen. Also note that you may need error eliminators depending on the led brand

 

I am sure that all the threads about the 2016 headlight will apply to the 2017. There are probably 100's of threads already.

 

If I bought lights again I would do ddm. And 35 bucks can't beat it

 

This is because projector lamps designed for halogen plus LED lights don't mix well.

A lot of people throw LEDs into their lamps, turn around and take a picture of the front of their Taco from 4 feet away and go "HOLY SHIT LOOK!" and are on their merry way without realizing that they've just lowered their output at longer distances, and replaced it with an aura of glare that explodes out 15 feet from their truck and just seems stupidly bright.

LED's are great at raw lumen output, but because they work in a different way than a halogen bulb does, the Tacoma's projector headlight has a rough time of focusing it properly and "projecting" it out as far as a halogen will. There isn't really a good way to give an LED a 360 degree throw like an HID or Halogen.

Think of it like hooking up a really powerful motor to a shitty, inefficient transmission. You've got the raw power, it's just being wasted.

Gotta agree, in terms of usable light output from stock headlight housings, HID is currently king. There will be a day when LED catches up and surpasses HID, though. HID's big disadvantage is it has to have a shitload of voltage to "fire" the arc to start up. Hence the big ballast.

LED tech will get there eventually- it's already more efficient, but just figuring out how to make the optics work is the issue.

For instance LED light bars are great because they get to design their own optics from the ground up- LED's are awesome in such an application.

Right now, I think Morimoto's 2 stroke is probably the best LED out there, but I'm still kinda "eh" about LED in a projector housing.

I forgot to mention that after a couple days with LED I also went to DDM and went HID. LED was bright but the throw wasn't there for me. It's much better with HID and you can't beat DDMs pricing. I threw my LEDs in my fog lamps and i'm going to go back to halogen for fogs. Light is way too bright from the stock fog lamps with LEDs.

 

Depends what your goals are really. Seems to me that if you want reliability you'd stick with the factory halogen h11s. If you want light output then HID is the way to go.
Sure the leds will work with the factory wiring but no thx on the cooling fans not to mention the chance of getting true Cree grids is unlikely when you spend 35$ on Amazon.
Halogen bulbs run on the order of 1000 degrees. TRUE HIDs run cooler on the bulb itself ( not the arc ) but you won't find a "true" hid on Amazon. The only real HIDs are made by Osram and Philips and they DO NOT make aftermarket bulbs or kits reguardless of what any website tries to sell you. Your best bet is to go with reputable companies that re-base Philips bulbs.
LEDs are a market currently flooded with crap products and the only way you know if you got a real Cree LED is to inspect the grid with a microscope. No thx, I'll run my Morimoto HIDs or my XenonDept kit which both source Philips bulbs, Osram salt, etc.
By the way here's a real HID bulb with a thermal camera, notice it's running about 850 degrees ON THE BULB and the rest of the assembly is cool.
Here's also a list of most common plastics and their melting/flash points. The fact that LED assemblies get that hot is scary.

 

Depends on whats important to you in a light. Leds look awesome, consume low power and theoretically should outlast you. They cast a very even light. BUT.... they cast a very even light. And your headlights were not designed for that style light output. Look on any reputable lighting company and you will see headlights are supposed to follow a pretty specific pattern where the middle is cast further than light to the sides. This effect is caused by a long filament casting light in every direction but causes more light in center for longer throw. Because leds only generate light from 2 single points they do not have a brighter center therefore cast as much light to the sides as middle. I also have an issue driving on wet newly paved roads. The combination of less output down road and worse color for actually seeing makes em dangerous on a wet road. But with yellow halogen fogs its doable until i gather the courage for a proper retrofit.

Tldr: if you care more about being seen than actually being able to see go led all day. If you care about seeing the road and stuff infront of you go halogen or hid.

And idk how people recommend opt7 led bulbs. I had them for a couple days and couldnt drive my truck at night without fogs. I bought piaa(pn17202) because i love their ion yellow halogens and they are better for sure than the opt7 but not excellent. If we are being honest my stock h11 gave me better vision down road, h9 would be nice upgrade
