What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Anyone know about fan clutches? I tested mine and got the following results:

I can stop the fan from spinning about 60 seconds after startup by holding rolled up paper against the blades.

I can stop the fan from spinning after the truck is at operating temperature (about 194F) with rolled up paper.

The fan spins for a second or two before stopping once the truck is shut off.

Are these all symptoms of a bad fan clutch?

Also, trying to figure out the difference between the two clutches for the 3RZ, Toyota changed it in 2002.

Is your truck overheating?

 

I have an engine vibration that I have been trying to diagnose for a while. I've gone through all the obvious things and then decided to test the clutch. I read that it should stop immediately when you turn the engine off.

When idling my temps do sometimes get above 200 though.

 

These should be AT only, someone say way to heavy for little truck but E resist additional load and 10 ply should increase puncture resistance, I just got to el paso last night. Some sections of hwy up to 90 smooth, 47 psi front 50 psi rear

 

Your temps seem high even for Florida, 186° is about normal for most.
You shouldn't be able to stop the blades at operating temperature, it sounds like you are on the right track.

 

That's what I figured. I will be replacing the water pump soon since it is leaking and I might as well do the clutch at the same time. I guess I could unbolt the fan and see if the vibration goes away first.

I still don't know why toyota changed the fan clutch in 2002 though.

Whats the recommendation for oil changes on the tcase. Every 30k?

 

If you are sure the clutch is slipping but bearings are good and the case is not physically damaged (no leaks) I would rather attempt to rebuild the clutch instead to spending money on the new one. It is actually not that difficult nor expensive. On the other hand I would think that the fan clutch is the last thing that can go wrong with this truck.

 

When I bought my truck in 98 It had a camper (I wish it was the high one like yours) with "carpet set". It is similar to what you show - the middle parts can be put flat on the bottom when not used as a sleeping platform.

Actually It can be used in different configurations (it is 1/3 - 2/3 split in length) which is good for groceries shopping dividing cargo space in to compartments preventing your stuff from sliding all the way to the front.



The carpet part is also nice for getting model RC planes to the flying field.





As for the sleeping two people could sleep comfortably, two and 10yoears old child is getting tight

I just wish the topper is higher as it is a bit claustrophobic if you are inside "mummy" type sleeping bag .

And yes, after all these years I'm going to rebuild it - the carpet is torn in few places and the wood split here and there. I also noticed that I have a leak at the tailgate so sometimes I see mushrooms growing on the carpet covering the tailgate

 

Here was mine when I bought it off craigslist. Same carpet! But at least yours is blue not this awful porno pink.



Yeah this carpet was nasty af. When I re carpeted it I could hear the moans of long lost lovers after each pull.

Your's is the exact same as mine with the 1/3 2/3 bottom, and I don't have a highrise camper unfortunately so yeah I can understand the claustrophobia!

I moved the adjustable rear shackles for another 1/2" height and finally chopped my exhaust right after the rear axle.

Thanks, that helps. Your wood looks much better than mine. Mine is falling apart at joints (it has splinters here and there and exposed nails) so I will have to rebuild wood too. I fixed it few times by enforcing corners and replacing all hinges but it's time to just rebuild the whole thing.

I don't see the front wall piece in your pictures. How do you keep sides from falling inside if the floor plates are removed? Is is screwed to the bed? Also I have a plate of carpet (on a piece of plywood) that is covering the tailgate. The only value it has is when I drop the tailgate I have the whole bottom surface under the carpet (nice when moving delicate stuff like model airplanes).

What I also like about this setup is that all pieces can be easy removed and I can use empty bed for hauling dirty stuff (firewood, Christmas tree, junk and trash, building or garden materials). Then wipe out the bed clean and put the carpet back in less than 5 minutes.

And yes, the pink looks really bad. Even with my blue carpet, when my son saw it for the first time, he called my truck "Pimp Mobile" - to put 70k miles on it in less than 3 years the previous owner must be driving from state to state screwing under the camper .

BTW when you did your upholstery did you replaced the foam too? The old one might still have some sperm stains in it .

Nope not screwed, I don't think I have ever just had the sides in without the floor pieces on the floor or on the rails and don't think I ever will so haven't had a problem with that. It's either all in, or all out.

Yeah I have that board of carpet too, never installed it onto my tailgate as mine has the plastic bed liner on it which is a good break between the carpet inside and the dirty outdoors. But looks like it works for your application! I may remove the carpet on my piece and put some coating on it to make it a tailgate table.

I also have a longer wood piece (as you can see in the first picture) that I believe is used as a shelf, don't know if that is what it was designed for or what.

All my friends called my truck the Shaggin Wagon, my RGB lights also added to affect.

I should've replaced the foam! It looked fine because of how thick that shag carpet was, but I was sure to clean it up haha

 

I noticed that, I never had them in my setup.

I always wanted to put a spray on bedliner in my truck, just somehow never got around it. But 99% I'm driving with carpet so I was not pressed to to that.

This setup is great when loading 4x8 sheets - they fit flat exactly on the carpet with just 2 feet sticking out the back.
