front diff fluid change

is there a sticky or thread anywhere on changing front diff fluid, have searched and can't seem to find one

 

Trying this today. Same amount of gear oil in front and rear???

 

front diff only uses 2 quarts IIRC

 

I just finished up changing mine (front diff) along with the rear diif, transfer case and manual tranny. On my rig (2006 4x4, 2.7L Reg Cab) both the drain and fill plugs were on the drivers side of the front diff.

As mentioned, they take a 10m hex/allen to remove. The head s of the bolts themselves are pretty big (probably 24mm or so) so they are easy to spot.

If you have a decent amount of miles on the truck and/or any corrosion underneath due to salt etc. hit both of em up with some PB Blaster or similar numerous times a few days before you plan on doing the service.

As always, make certain you can break free the fill plug BEFORE you loosen the drain plug and drain the oil.

With my rig (salt belt ughhh!) I highly doubt I could have broken the bolts free with an L shaped allen wrench. I used a 10mm hex/allen socket attached to a 24" breaker bar.

It's a pretty easy breezy job once you have both the drain and fill plugs broken loose.
