2nd Gen Frame Rust Repair

Hey guys, doing my first post & was hoping I can get some help/info regarding frame rust repairs. Did a bunch of research already, & yes I did use the search bar A LOT, but I figured I'd ask with all the knowledge floating around the forums! I apologize in advance for the length, just trying to be thorough!

First things first, I have a 06 6-speed 4x4 access cab with just under 62,000 miles on it. My truck passed the frame recall in February 2016, but I asked the local dealership if they could re-inspect it since I'm getting my rear leafs checked anyway. I've checked my frame occasionally, but really noticed a lot of scaling/bubbling lately, specifically in the area where the a/c condensation drips & in the area underneath my passenger doors (see pictures). I know it's probably caused from the a/c drip (attaching a hose/tube soon) & im pretty sure it won't fail since it doesn't meet the criteria of having at least a 10mm hole & I want to get rid of the rust before it gets worse.

I plan on using a wire wheel brush to take off as much rust as possible followed by Eastwood rust encapsulator & some por-15. Or I may possibly take it to a local shop that does the rust-proofing for the Toyota dealership on our island, in place of applying the por-15.

Im certain there will be areas I cant remove rust since I won't be able to reach it & I am wondering if it would still spread, even while treating it . It's gonna be my first time trying to do something like this & I need some tips on how to do the job well. Any help is welcome since I will definitely need it! Mahalo in advance guys

 

Assuming you bought it before December 2, 2016 I would do nothing until the current '05 to '10 class action suit settlement is final. It is expected to be ordered on June 26, 2017. Once the final order is entered you can have Toyota inspect it as often as you like until June 26 of 2018 or 12 years after your truck's original date of service--whichever is "longer". If perforations of > 10 mm are found the frame will be replaced. If there are no perforations > 10 mm use whatever artistic ability you have to make some...

Looks like your frame got the CRC treatment. Mine got the CRC crap. The bubbles are rust growing under the coating. I've been picking the scabs and coating the wounds. May have screwed myself by not leaving it to its own demise. Not sure if I should keep doing it or remove coating and pack it with corrosives.

Original date of service meaning the date the frame was replaced ? you think drilling a hole & letting it accumulate some rust would count as artistic ability? Haha

 

Was the frame previously replaced? You had not mentioned that--if so, when?

 

No, it hasnt been replaced. Still the original frame

 

Then original date of service will be whenever the first owner bought it...

 

That last picture looks pretty bad .I just cleaned up my 2008 with a drill and wire cup brush . Sprayed with Rustoleum rust reformer . Couldn't reach behind muffler or gas tank . My frame isn't too bad because I cleaned and painted every year because of all the salt on the roads in the north east . I plan on por-15 this summer . I will post some pictures later after the rain stops.

If I'm unable to get the frame replaced, I'll probably follow this guys write up. Looks really solid, but I may try to use something other than phosphoric acid for the etching step.

 

Got some rust reformer, fluid film and wire brushes I'm going to town on my frame over the next few days. I'm sure it'll look like a lot better then it does now!

 

Only way to get rid of rust is to sand blast or use a needle gun. Wire brushing will only get top surface off . If you needle gun it you will see a lot of pitting and also how deep the rust can penentrate the metal.
Kind of surprised to have that much rust in Hawaii . Go to beach a lot .
Might want to wait for class action suit to be settled like cliffyk suggested .

 

Don't mean to hijack, but I bought my 09 at the beginning of this March, why do they exclude me from the lawsuit? Ridiculous. My frame looks similar/slightly worse maybe. I've treated it pretty thoroughly with oils and FF for now.

I almost wish I didn't treat the frame with oil based protectants because now it will be impossible to strip everything to paint/por15.

 

It is common with "product defect" class action suits to set a cut-off date 6 months or more prior to the expected final order date--this prevents the unscrupulous from buying up gobs of defective product at discounted prices, getting it replaced/repaired under the settlement terms, and then cashing in. It sucks if you are not a class member, but it is yet another of those cases where a few a-holes screw things up for others.

My '09 came to me on 11/24 of last year in part because my "pre-buying" research dug up the suit and the 12/2/16 cut-off date. Mine is a "Florida" vehicle so the frame is like new, but just in case I wanted to get in "under-the-wire". IMHO that 12/2/16 cut-off date destroys the current value of any '05 to '10 Tacoma that has any more than slight frame rust issues. But the good news from what I have seen there may very well be another 2010 to 2015 class action suit as those vehicles in rust belt states age.

I moved here from New England 26 years ago so rotted undercarriages are just a dim memory for me, which no doubt affects my opinion, however I look at some of these photos or recently purchased Tacomas and cannot help but think I would have laughed in the sellers face for trying to palm off such a rust bucket--we see them here only on the buy-here/pay-here" lots, as snowbirds trade them in and the dealers immediately wholesale them...

To be honest, I'm upset about not being included at the moment, but on the other hand, growing up in New England, I've dealt with a rusty chassis on all my vehicles. Only now has my attention focused on it, owning a Tacoma with it's reputation.

When I bought the truck I was under the impression that it was only a 1st gen and prior issue. My fault for not researching enough (or is It? Actually it's Toyota's fault). If my memory serves correctly, my other vehicles have had equal rust issues. I'm confident my truck's frame will outlast the drivetrain as long as I continue to treat it with oil undercoatings. Hell, there's still the factory black coating on 90% of the frame, just welds and seams going.

I've made it a habit of kneeling under other Tacomas in parking lots and seeing what other people have and probably aren't aware of. I've seen some pretty rough undercarriages. It could be worse for me.

is there a similar situation for a 2o11 Tacoma? (relatives) .. where you just take in & get them to inspect ... i recall the horrific hassle it was in 2o11 to get checked with no damned official paper ... dealer fcks were basically clueless
