Steering Wheel Spacers?

Ok, so I am generally pleased with the seating position in my truck. (I did extensively test drive before buying, of course) However, if the wheel would telescope a bit further - maybe 2 inches or so, it'd fit me perfectly, and I could slide the seat back to my ideal position for leg comfort. At the moment, I have to be really far from the wheel for my legs to be in the perfect position.

So...does anyone know of a product like this, that you could simply add to scoot the wheel back a bit? I'd love to go from good to perfect on seating comfort if there exists such a product.

interesting, this is fist time i‘ve see this product. i dont know if it strong enough to handle the job?? i think will be ok, if its feed your needs and the product already in the market.

 

I think this model is only good for aftermarket steering wheels, but owuld love it if I'm wrong. Gonna drop them an email to ask. Didn't know if someone else has already tried to do this though.

I've used wheel adaptors like this on older trucks to install aftermarket steering wheels, not sure if this would work for what you're truing to accomplish although if it even fits. If it did fit it would probably be somewhat ugly since it would be a small adaptor in the middle of the existing steering column assembly and you'd probably lose some of the OEM plastic covers on the column due to the extended length.

 

I believe that is for pre airbag vehicles. Don't see any way you could make that work in our trucks with the airbag and all the electronics in the wheel.

You ever seen one on a factory setup? Since you have seen things like this in use, you're the best source I've go so far.

If it did fit, and everything still worked, I think I'd trade 2" of somewhat ugly for perfect comfort. Shit, maybe. Didn't think about the panels on the column. If the manufacturer says it'd work, I may take a flyer on it for $25 and see what it looks like. Would likely need a pro install though to align right.

You're probaby right with the electronics, but, damn, it would be nice to fix.

 

I've used these adaptors on many older vehicles, currently using it on my 84 Toyota 4x4 and my 72 Chevy 4x4. The purpose of this style adaptor is to mount a bolt on style wheel to a splined steering column. A factory wheel typically has splines in it so it mounts directly onto the steering column shaft. In my experience on older vehicles, you could not run a factory wheel and this type of adaptor because the column is not going to go through the adaptor and the factory wheel could not bolt to the adaptor.

I don't see any way this style adaptor could work and leave a desired effect. If it did fit on the shaft you would lose the factory wheel along with the air bag and all steering wheel controls and you'd probably have to live with warning lights on the dash being permanently on. The resulting loss of the factory wheel would likely negate any gain you get with the adaptor length since the bolt on style wheels are very flat and don't have as much depth as a factory wheel.

 

Great answer. Thanks man. I didn't know how the column connected, and you answered that perfectly. I definitely am not irritated enough to give up my stock wheel and all it's controls. I wonder if anyone will make some sort of spacer that the factory wheel would be able to attach to?

 

this is not a job for a 25 dollar spacer.

 

If someone did make a spacer that would work with the factory wheel it could negatively impact how the airbag functions, wherein its too close to your face and does more harm than good. Something else to consider with this type of potential mod and might explain why there isn't something like this available

 

I'd be more worried that airbag parameters would be altered from factory specs for driver vs wheel distance.

But I've always wondered even for 2nd gens, there is a rail sensor on the seat, but is there a distance sensor in the steering wheel?

Yeah, all good points. Well, worth a thought. Guess I'll just continue alternating between "comfy leg distance" days and "comfy arm distance" days. Thanks for the input.

Hey Dude, I've been looking into this as well -- I'm 6'4" and the steering wheel on my second gen does not telescope out far enough.

But can't get info on safety, airbag, OEM controls from the manufacturer. They said to call a body shop and they'll know, but my mechanic has no idea without looking at the installation instructions. I don't want to lose OEM controls or airbag at all. Have you found anything that works?

I bought my spacer and they do offer a harness if you have steering wheel volume controls.
It took forever to arrive though.
I have not had a chance to install it with the amount of work I have right now, but as soon as I do I can post some pictures.

Edit: I meant to say check out the post of the thread. Post #197 is the one I posted. The link is still the same. And as stated below, there are many options. For me the spaceshop spacers seem to be good quality
