I'm having the same problem with my rear Bilstein res shocks, the left rear is blown out (found out today when looking under the truck to try and pinpoint the clunk noise, I've been trying to pinpoint the noise for about 8 months now). I thought it was the leafsprings (which have been shot since the truck was a year old with 11k miles on it). I've repeatedly told North Hills Toyota in Pittsburgh about the leafsprings since they started sagging horribly (their response has always been "It's normal for the Tacoma to squat in the rear"). I understand it's not going to sit level but when I climb up on the rear hitch step (all 6'8", 232lbs of me) the sumbitch drops like 2.5-3") that's not normal. I installed Firestone Airbags to get buy and help the rear suspension until I can buy new aftermarket leafsprings but now that the left rear shock is completely blown out I'm going to remove the airbags and take the truck to another Toyota dealer and tell them to replace the rear shocks and leafsprings under warranty or I'm calling Corporate (I know I should've called them sooner but with kids and work I haven't had any extra free time to be without my truck).

It's a 2013 Tacoma BAJA dcsb with 34k miles on it. I do have the extended warranty as well.

Also if I end up getting a new set of springs under warranty can I use the BAJA billy's with a Wheeler's 3 leaf add a leaf setup (already have them, just haven't installed them yet) or would I need to get longer shocks? I don't offroad my truck. It's a daily driver/ family rig. The firestone airbags have 22psi in them in this picture to help compensate for the blown shock and shitty springs.

 

You should be fine with those shocks if you don't off-road and have to worry about flexing the suspension. At 3" in the rear, you may want to consider extended brake lines just to be safe.

 

The Wheelers 3 leaf ad a leaf is only a 1.5" lift so I should be fine on the brake lines although I plan on eventually getting extended stainless steal lines down the road at some point. The shocks won't over extend when the suspension is flexed out with only 1.5" lift in the rear, will it? I'm not familiar with the billy's on these trucks. Does anyone know the extended/ collapsed length's of the BAJA billy's?

 

Wheeler's 3 leaf is fine in the back. You don't need extended brake lines for it. That's what I have in the back of mine, and I've had it flexed out many, many times.

 

Thanks Dave41079. How's your Softopper holding up, I'll be selling my Leer 100xl soon and looking at getting a Softopper. Kinda leary about how well it'll hold up in the northeast though with the heavy snow and ice, etc... I know you guys get a fair amount of snow and ice in Nashville.

 

It's held up great. I really like the ability to have it off in a few minutes so I can use the bed for taller/larger items. It is definitely not weather proof though, leaks a small amount with all the rain we get here.

 

How bad does it leak? I usually have my kids stroller and other stuff that can't really get wet in the bed. I just removed the Leer so I can reseal the side windows (previous owner said it didn't leak but it f'ing pours inside the side windows in a heavy rain, snow or using a pressure washer to wash the truck. I'd really like to find a cap with windoors but wan the versatility of removing it quickly when I need to as well. Don't really like the Bestop because of the vinyl see through side windows.

 

It just drips mostly at the front corners. I could likely seal it up, but I take it on and off pretty often, so I just deal with it.

 

I misread the post.....I also have a 3leaf AAL, from Icon. That makes mine 1.5 in the back too. With out off-roading, you will be absolutely fine. That being said, I wouldn't necessarily worry about the extended rear lines as well.

 

Thanks JuanitoBunito. After I pay off the truck I'll probably lift it up more but I really want to upgrade to stainless steel brake hoses.

Hi , taco owners new to Tacoma world & wanted to ask has anyone primed and painted their frames while the truck was new or almost new ? I have 2015 inferno trd pro , my plan is remove wheels spare rear shocks skids exhaust ,then scuff w sanding blocks etc. Mask body then mask chassis w tons of aluminum foil tape paper etc , prep Sol inner frame with microfiber rags dipped in prep Sol wrapped around a long flexible antenna , then 3 coats epoxy primer followed by 3 coats Eastwood xtreme chassis black all done with professional paint gun , no rattle cans . What do you all think of the idea and BTW this truck is in jersey but stores December thru April and will never see the Morton salt factory. Also Eastwood inner frame paint insidenframe and cross members . l will prime and paint every chassis piece axle a arms etc but I realize the prep is sooo important , probably take 7 to 10 days counting cure times ! Any other ideas out there would be appreciated to protect our beloved Tacoma's !

I wouldn't say over kill because it's a great idea. However, ......maybe look into "fluid film". I did it when my truck was still newer and clean. I'm in Chicago so salt is very prevalent here in the winter. My undercarriage still looks absolutely spotless. I did about 5-6 cans that first fall for the first time application then 2-3 cans each fall after....just a thought.

 

Added an Archive garage flip kit on the rear to get a bit of factory rake still on the stock rear leafs but it worked out well...

What size tires are those?

 

Oh and its been 12k miles since I had my driver rear shock blow and get replaced. Now my driver side one is leaking as well. Since Im just over 36k miles Toyota wants me to pay for it, so i expect I will be replacing both in the rear with something else. Is there a good easy swap that would be considered an upgrade? Ill likely remove my AAL and my Airbags at the same time and go with some Dakars. Really just fed up with the way the rear of my truck rides.

And has anyone sold/traded their beadlock style wheels for the 4R TRDPro wheels? Its getting time that I need new tires and would like a larger wheel so I can run a softer sidewall.

 

I'll likely be going in to the dealer to get them to warranty the left rear shock and hopefully the leafsprings as well since they've been shot since the truck was a year old (dealer I've been going to kept telling me the rear sag is normal.) Not with just me standing on the rear bitch step, I'm 6'8" 228lbs so that shouldn't make the rear of the truck squats down 1.5-2".

How did you get them to warranty the shock after three years, extended warranty? I have that as well.
