First post!- just ordered a new Tacoma- best bed cover?

Not a fan of the trifold hard covers, like the soft roll up ones but can be sold on pretty much anything. Waterproof is good but "keeps things mostly try" works for me too.

What do people have? How much did you pay? If you were to buy one right now what would it be?

I bought a used bakflip g2 for $200. It was going to be $400 but it hailed the night i went to look at it, he needed it that night because he still had stuff in the back. He told me to come back the next day and pick it up...... well that night there was a hail storm and it put a lot of small dents all over it. I offered $200 for it since it still worked and he said yes.

You dont notice the dents until you walk up on it so i bought it.

Backflip Revolver X2. It's basically a roll up cover that has hard slats in it that lock down when you close the cover. That way it's much hard for people to steal your shit and you don't have to worry about wind blowing open a Velcro cover while you're on the road. Mine on my F150 has been waterproof as well, I often keep a bag of seed in the truck box and I've never arrived with that bag wet if a grower needs it.

I'm with you on the roll-up soft cover. I had a hard top ARE tonneau for years. When I bought it, I loved it. Looked like it was OEM. After some practical situations where I needed to haul large items, it became a nuisance. The icing on the cake was when Hurricane Wilma rolled through and lifted it open and bounced my truck like it was spanking it. Bent it all to hell. It never was very secure, so if you want something that keeps your stuff safe, nothing will stop a determined thief. But if you want out-of-sight-out-of-mind peace, any cover will do the trick. I now have a new tonneau: Access Literider (also have a new truck). The reason I got this one was because I wanted something that mounted on the INSIDE of the bed rails, not on top of the bed, so I could still get a bed rack and have somewhat use of the tonneau. I paid $250 for it (was an open box, they normally go for about $290 to $310).

 

Never heard that one before but if that happens with my TruXedo Lo Pro I'll take it off and throw it in the dumpster.

 

Bakflip is the shit. I loved mine. That's what I'd have if this truck didn't have the factory tonneau.

 

I love my soft cover. See below for some more info and I can send more previous posts about it. I also have a ton of pictures of my truck in my build page in my signature.

 

If I wanted a hard tonneau cover, I'd keep my Undercover SE. But, I need more height for my hauling needs, so I'm going with a topper. It will be installed next Tuesday, so the flat top will be available. It was pouring down rain when I first drove my truck (was already on it) and it didn't leak. But, as mentioned, it makes it really hard to haul tall/big stuff.

 

I have had a Roll-N-Lock cover for over 10 years. It has served my purposes pretty well. It is secure, and I can lock items inside the bed without worrying about theft. If tall items such as furniture or bicycles need to be transported, the cover rolls cleanly away.

There are a few negatives to consider. First, the box into which the cover rolls does fit inside the bed, and is lost space. Second, the vinyl covering is affected by UV. Mine lived outside in the south, but was fine until a recent hail storm (golf ball to tennis ball size). Whether the UV caused the vinyl to weaken is a matter of conjecture. The vinyl top skin took a beating, and it has multiple scars. It is not water tight now.

Alas, I need to buy a new one, due to the hail damage, and the replacement parts aren't available. There are certainly more options available now, including a similar cover that has a painted aluminum surface instead of vinyl, which I assume would be less vulnerable to UV. The current Roll-N-Lock model has some improvements in how it is mounted and the locking mechanism.

Soft vinyl covers seem to be too vulnerable to a thief with a knife.

 

I had a roll-n-lock as a summer student one year. The dust and dirt from driving on back roads got into the mechanism that rolls the topper up and it didn't work after 3 months. Kept getting stuck. I'm much happier with the simpler but similar concept Revolver X2 cover.

 

I can see how dust, dirt and grit could be a problem. My driving is mainly on paved roads, and with the amount of rain we get, any dirt gets washed away regularly. Pollen is more of a pain than dirt for me, but it is seasonal. Other debris that requires occasional attention is pine needles, leaves and seed pods from the trees.

I took a look at the Revolver X2. Looks nice, and not losing any space within the bed is a big plus. Definitely just as secure as the Roll-N-Lock or the RollBAK G2. Will the Revolver G2 work if one wants to cover 1/2 or 3/4 of the bed only? It appears to me that it is not designed for that type of use.

 

No, that's the Revolvers one thing that it canr do that roll-n-lock does, though I rarely would need that.
