2017 TOYOTA TACOMA TRD SPORT BUILD

    • I bought this truck brand new with 3 miles on it in Cocoa Beach, Florida where we lived at the time on December 22, 2016 and it was the first vehicle I'd ever bought new. I had always enjoyed lightly modifying all of my previous vehicles but since the truck was the first that was new, I wanted to wait to break the truck in and do things right the first time. It was only days before I had the itch to start modifying things.
    • Within the first month, we took the truck on the first of many camping adventures throwing kayaks and paddle boards in the back. It was also in that first month that the truck already had new wheels and tires along with a growing list of planned upgrades. That's when I knew it would not stay stock for long.
    • Once we made the big move west to southern California, we made more friends with similar offroading and camping interests and that's when we got the taste of everything California has to offer from the desert to the Eastern Sierra mountains. We then went off the deep end building the truck out.
    • The truck has been through many phases as we’ve dialed in the setup to meet our needs but that’s part of the build process and we’ve enjoyed the truck (and the adventures it carried us on) every step of the way!

    Fantastic build!

I have Black grille/badges/mirror/handles en route to start the "murdering" out process. Got my eyes on the TRD wheels right now, they look like they've got a bit of an offset to stock - do you know?

    Going to do a lift?

Thanks, I appreciate it! Black will look great 'murdered out'! Keeping it clean is a PITA but it looks awesome! No plans for a lift. I'm really happy with the size gain from these tires and the factory ground clearance. I don't want to mess with anything more from factory since it could potentially affect gas mileage, warranties, and other part compatiabilities. Some of the lifts I've seen look amazing though so if you're up for it and do it right, it's worth it. May change my mind though! Regarding the wheels, they do have 0.787" offset when compared to stock I believe. More specs below for ya! I think they're right...

    Stock TRD wheels and tires
    • Wheels: 17" diameter, 7.5" wide, 30mm offset
    • Tires: P265/65R17 size, 30.6" diameter tire, 10.4" wide, 6.8" sidewall
TRD Pro wheels and KO2 tires
    • Wheels: 17" diameter, 7" wide, 4mm offset
    • Tires: LT265/70R17 size, 31.6" diameter tire, 10.4" wide, 7.3" sidewall
    Overall gain
    • 20mm wheel offset, 1"/3.3% tire diameter, 0.5"/7.4% tire sidewall

Good on you! Did 2" lift on mine but helped the aesthetics of it being a LB, and a lot of the camping we do requires a bit more clearance out here.

Thanks for the rim specs. Drooling.

Much improved over stock. I have the BBP Sport as well and these are most of the mods I want to do. I have been debating between stock wheel or TRD rims. I'm not sure how I feel about the red on the wheels with the blue truck. It looks nice, but I'm not sure I like it more than stock. I'm also between derping the grill and going with the Pro grill. Looking at your truck is making me want to go the more expensive route!

Thanks! I really like the improvements.

Regarding the wheels, I think they are what make the truck. There's a matte grey option as opposed to matte black if you'd prefer that. I haven't seen them on a BBP I dont' think but I'm sure they'd look great. The wheels and tires are the biggest change I think. The stock wheels definitely don't look bad, especially if you put some beefier tires on them.

For the grill, I really do like the Pro option but it's definitely pricey. I really like the plastidipped Sport/OR grills with emblem left chrome and the TRD emblem added. I also saw @sexytacoma's SR grill where he cut/modded it and added Satoshi TACOMA letters and Raptor lights. I think that's been my favorite and cleanest grill thus far one even more so than the Pro grill. My only gripe with the Pro grill is how it sticks out as compared to the stock ones. I really like the aggressive look though.

Regarding the wheel TRD logos, I wasn't sure how I felt about the red either but it doesn't look awful with the red taillights. @rrentrop makes some awesome decals for the wheels and be color matched to any factory color and they work on these wheels. I'm between blue to match the truck, cement to match the TACOMA in the grill, and silver/grey to match the lugs/locks. I can't decide! I value any opinion :D

I didn't know you could get color matched lettering! That seals the deal for me i guess. Someone posted a pic of the BBP ones on the thread you linked. I think that's the way to go. Just adds a little pop of color to that big area of black. I think the red looks good on the BBP truck, but the blue looks better.

Yeah it's just a nice little touch that most people won't notice but people with OCD like me definitely notice and appreciate! I've been torn for awhile now on which color to get. I wasn't sure if blue on blue is too tacky and if the cement to match the grill will look better. I don't think you can go wrong though on keeping red or switching to blue, cement, grey, silver, etc.

Don't think blue would looks any tackier than the red. Cement would probably look nice too though. Maybe a little more understated. I guess they're only 20 bucks so you aren't out too much if you don't like the one you pick.

What color do you think? Red is stock, blue and cement are decals. Excuse my poor 5min MS paint "photoshop" job

Thanks! That's what I've been leaning towards the most. There's also silver sky and magnetic grey metallic which have more of metallic flake. I think the cement would look the best out of the silver/greys due to the matte wheels and letters on the grill

    Here are the options:

    Blue

    Cement

    Grey

    Silver

I went back and forth on black lugs vs chrome. I ended up keeping chrome due to:
    • Offset all black wheels and tires since I didn't like white lettering on the outside
    • Didn't have to buy new lugs, could reuse OEM chrome ones
    • Could use OEM chrome wheel locks
    • The sockets of where the lugs go on these wheels actually are not painted black like the rest of the wheels so there may be some chrome showing (only a little) even with black lugs - see below

Dang. Now I am leaning towards the grey...you had to go and show some more choices! Yep, truck looks great any way you dice it. I am shopping for wheels now and you are gonna make me buy these! I like the decal on the bed in black. A+ If I could just find some matte black 4" nerf bars that fit an access I'd be doing' better! Now leaning towards Iron Cross and taking them to a weld shop to make 'em fit.
    Keep up the good work!
