2000 taco hood W/ scoop

I want to get a nice new hood with a scoop, but can't find any for the 2000, only for 01s...

 

Only way is to make your own.

2001-04 doesn't have a hood scoop

 

01-04 never had a hood scoop option either. No first gens did. Some have transplanted a scooped hood over from 4-runners but it's a bit of work

 

McNeil has a hood with an actual scoop for 01-04 that is actually a scoop vs. louvers on their 96-00 hoods. Doing the 01-04 conversion is a lot of work for a scoop imo.

I was thinking about adding louvers to my hood to let hot air out since I go out in the desert with my truck. I made a scoop that let in air for my 2nd gen and bought an aftermarket hood but never ended up putting it on.

Hanneman looka like the cheapest route with the one that will bolt onto your hood hinges for $275. Looks like it would flow with the lines of the stock body panels.

Tho' IMO it made it look like a PepBoys truck.

Was just placed there temporarily for the visual appeal/and a joke
and 'cause it was only $ 10.00 STMD. (more $ and I would not have bought it)
It now resides, somewhere hidden within my garage.

Painted it might look better... but would serve no real purpose on my rig.

Nice finish work... but what's functional about it ?

Beside possibly adding additional clearance for an SC... I see no purpose.

Neat that it can be done... and my MIG welder would suffice...
But seriously... I could think of better things to waste my money and time with.

 

Each to there own, was a Challenge for me and I'm happy with it and is unique
just like a standard cab v6 is unique.
For those that just want a $20 plastic scoop screwed to the hood that's fine too,
"but what's functional about it ?" You say? that means air can go into the scoop and or heat
can come out of the scoop, maybe you didn't know a supercharger adds heat to the engine area unlike maybe YOUR stock motor and for each 1 pound of boost, that equals to 10 degree of added heat, so if you are running 8 or 9 pounds of boost, a smaller 2.1 pulley, about 80 more hp than YOUR stock engine, the supercharger will create an additional 80+ degrees temperatures because of the boost, so it's an added benefit for me because I'm running a supercharger, but for you there would be no benefit as you don't have a supercharger I'm guessing.
If you didn't know ALL the Tacoma and 4Runners new and older ones have blocked off inlets for their hood scoops.

 

Just looked through your thread.. man that's some good work. The other thread I saw, the guy used a flange tool or something. You just cut and pasted the new hood section in place and kept tack welding it? Got any pictures of the bottom?

Yes cut the scoop out of the 4 runner hood and trimmed the scoop evenly all around, then centered the scoop on the Tacoma hood and traced a pen around it while taped onto the Tacoma hood, then cut the middle section out that I traced and the scoop fit perfectly, clamped it in place and tack welded (mig welder) my way around the scoop every inch or so, that way there was no warping of the metal because it's so thin, instead of a bead.
Ground down the high points on the tacks and was good to go. I will get a photo tomorrow of the underside,

 

Ive always wanted a real good scoop on my Tacoma.

 

MUCH much better, although it takes some time to do it the look is well worth it.

 

Here are the photos u asked for,
You have to weld the Intake grill support under the hood to hold the fiberglass screen section. Four bolts hold the Fiberglass section in place. Cut the hood supports to fit the Intake metal support on both sides. Weld the metal Intake grill to the hood supports on the 3 sides.
Unbolt the 4 bolts and the Intake fiberglass section slides forward out of the hood from the outside.
The 4Runner metal hood supports are a little different pattern then the Tacoma under the hood, so it's just a small puzzle to fit in the metal Intake support section that holds the fiberglass Intake, get the cutting grinder out, lay the metal fiberglass support over the hood supports, mark off the hood supports where the Intake support would go, cut out the hood supports sections on both sides, fit in the the fiberglass support with the fiberglass section in, line it up to make sure it's
a tight fit on the outside and weld in the lower metal support, the fiberglass mouth section has 1/2" play sliding forward or backward when it's sitting in the support,
So make sure it's set in there in about the middle so it can slide forward or backwards if needed for a tight fit for the fiberglass section.
You tighten the bolts down when you slide the fiberglass section to its correct place.
So there is some play to adjust the fiberglass section once in,
The metal work took about 3 hours to do give or take.
You can always do the metal work and then take the hood to a paint shop
for them to paint it as an option.

 

I made a similar open air scoop for an aftermarket hood I bought for my second gen. Now I'm thinking louvers for my first gen because it's easier and really only want it for cooling purposes vs. looks or an intake option. Love your hood though John.

 

I am starting to think this is out of my range of skills...

It looks awesome though, and I could really use the air that scoop would allow into my tight engine compartment.

 

If you can weld, basic tack weld and cut steel, use a grinder or saw, it's not as hard as it looks, I would buy a practice hood from the junk yard and take your time and not use your hood, then have someone paint it for you

 

If you could weld it in, the bondo work is just a matter of time and patience. I had a hood that was all dented up for my second gen and it looked good after an afternoon of work.

Here are some options I've been looking at that are more of the caveman style skill set variety. I'm primarily concerned about airflow on hot desert days rock crawling so whether the air is entering a scoop or leaving through a louver doesn't really matter to me. I think louvers are more effective at cooling anyway:

I know they're not for Tacomas, but they could be made to work - just have to watch out for the window washer nozzles. There's a zillion styles online that may work for your particular taste. I kind of can't wait to be finished with major mods so I can mess around with stuff like this.
