It's Really to bad that Toyota stopped the TRD supercharger, If there was a supercharger or turbo available for
the new 3.5 Tacoma motor it would be a game changer for Toyota.
I would go with a tundra, supercharged and you will get 500 hp.
Toyota HAS to up its game on the power for thier trucks.
With ford putting turbos on their engines and power number going up and up Toyota Has to step up.
To be honest I would have a hard time buying a new Tacoma that cost 35,000 and has less horse power than my 20 year old Tacoma, I would except more,

Yes, both the 4 liter and the 3.4 supercharged put out plenty of power, more than the new 3.5 motors.
But, I have to smile when I over take a new Tacoma going over vail pass at 10,000 feet with easy

For 40,000 grand I expect Toyota to fix the problem and make a supercharger or turbo, maybe a twin for the 3.5 motor, then I would probably upgrade But not until then,
Think of it, a 2018 Tacoma with 350-400 hp which is do able :))
That would get me a little excited
But at 278 hp and 4500 pounds, no way, I have a Tahoe with those type spec. already.

If the new 2018 Camry is any indication, Toyota got the message.

Plus the ranger is coming, and you can bet your butt its going to be EcoBoosted.

I bet the 2019 Tacoma is going to grow a pair.

Maybe if Toyota took a lesson from Tesla and actually did something to improve
the motor and transmission they might make some headway.
Teslas new power numbers are 5000 pounds and 0-60 at 2.2 seconds, 0-90 at 4.8 and 680 hp, ALL WHEEL DRIVE with a SINGLE speed transmission!!!, Mmmmm
No I don't want a Tesla and this is a completely different vehicle, but it shows
that some car companies are making huge advancements.
    Wake up Toyota!!!
278hp at 4500 pounds and a transmission that jumps all over the place doesn't cut it anymore
