Mudding questions!?

i have a 2010 tacoma sr5 i think and i have the 4x4 switch. when i am driving in to the mud do i go into it in H4 or L4? and if i go in it in H4 do i then switch to L4 once i am in the mud?

 

I usually stay in 4x2 when im in the mud. Sling that shit everywhere! Buuuut, If I feel i must use 4x4 to not get stuck, i use 4H to try and get through, If I feel it's not enough i'll go into 4L

 

One thing I found was that getting in second gear, 4-hi, i could keep on top of the mud much better than first gear, 4-lo - that just dug me in. This was on the stock dunflops. You don't want to get so much torque to your wheels that you just start digging in further!

 

It's really preference or what kind of mud/how deep it is. I personally go in 4hi and get a little momentum if there's plenty of room then if I am comfortable with it I'll play around in 2 hi. Typically mud is about spinning the tires so the mud flings off the tires not crawling through it.

 

I take preventative steps when wheeling, I always put it into 4HI before I hit the mud. In mud it's good to have tirespeed so you can gas it to sling the mud off your tires if they cake up... and they will with your tires (I have the same ones). If your in 4LO you can't get that wheelspin as easily. Now dont go peeling out the whole time your in the mud, just the occasional blip to clean the tread off.

Like the other person said, 4HI and in 2nd gear is a good place to start.

thanks guys. yea in tampa we have this place called the hill. its an old land fil place and the mudding is amazing. i just go my truck and i want to get some background on it before i go out with all my buds. so you guys say 4hi but in second gear? also when i am going through some little mud holes my tires spin and my car beeps. what is that?

 

probably your traction control but I'm not familar with all the electronics on the 2009's and up Tacos.

Second gear yes so you can keep the revs up if you need to clear the tires but you don't absolutely have to keep it in second it just can help.

 

In mud it's easy to be on the limiter in 4th though hehe. Don't ask how I know.

i never use 4 low in mud. always 4h like every1 said 4l is for torque. in mud you want wheel speed not wheel spin. but enough to clean you tread. on the other hand to much can be dangerous too.. ie lots of wheel spin (if you play in 2 wheel) and you grab dry ground and get alot of traction.. thats when sh*t breaks. that said... 4 hi another truck and recovery gear is your best bet untill you get familiar with mud and your truck.

as for the beeping, I just turn the traction control off.

 

Another thing to consider is if you are the first to go through the mud you may want to go off to the side of it then work your way in instead of heading straight for the middle.

Yeah, if you turn it off it will quiet that beeping and make sure your wheels will spin when needed

 

Plus it will absolutely stuff your forward progress in mud if you don't turn it off: The traction control will automatically apply brakes to spinning tires= no good.

I always just turn it off as soon as I hit the dirt, it really takes the fun out of wheelin'. Good on the street tho!
