fj cruiser an tacoma have the same engine right?

My manual says to use premium fuel of 91 or higher for the best performance. I've always put shell 93 in it.

 

My '09 manual says 87. What gives? I do remember in '05 the Tacoma's were somewhere reported to require premium fuel.

 

I remember seeing the 05-08s needing to run prem. They even have the lable on the fuel door. 09 is when the changed to where you can run 87-93 ur choice. I noticed when i built mine on the website and buddy at work has an 05 with the little label inside

You guys are using the words "require" and "needed". The manual states for best performance use premium fuel - its doesn't say it is necessary. If it were necessary, it wouldn't give you a choice.

And my 2005 doesn't have a premium fuel only label inside the fuel door.

 

Not siding with them, just read it in the new mag, then happen to see this thread. I would, I stress would, suspect that Toyota press people read these articles, since they supplied the fj for testing. They also in the article mention the premium fuel as a "con" in the pros and cons on the fj. By the way the Jeep won the comparison test...bastards. Basically because of front and rear lockers and solid axle...

I tend to agree, except one thing. I drove the FJ, and the blind spots are horrible, and the backwards doors are horrible. If I had no kids, I probably would have bought one, but since I do, I couldnt justify those doors.

I owned a 07 FJ before my 2010 tacoma..Since day 1 i ran 87 octane in it until i sold it with 60k miles...It never ran bad..toyota release a note saying it was OK to use 87 in them, But do not expect optimal performance..PS i noticed no difference in performace using 87 or 91 and my milaege was always the same with both during a couple of tests. I wish they put the auto tranny from the FJ into the tacoma though..that was a sweet transmission

 

Whats the difference in the trans? Thats right I didn't go look it up yet.

The engine is a 1GR-FE, 6-cylinder V type, 4 cycle, with bore and stroke of 3.70 x 3.74 in. & 241.1 cu. in. displacement
