I never thought of it being driven in too far causing the issue but that does make sense.

Does anyone have a good image of how far the seal needs driven in? I have the current one driven in flush with the housing.

I couldn't find any more info on the dust seal thingy. It doesn't seem to have its own part number, it's just shown with the whole CV assembly.

This is currently how it's installed -

    17B0D570-35CC-4DD0-BD6E-151278CC0243_zps_380d1d061606c0aa0452a66d43b4509affcd5a3f.jpg

    - the flat side faces the diff.

As for the rust, it looks way worse than it is because everything is damp. I will give it a good cleaning when I pull it apart.

I feel silly that I can't figure this out. I've rebuilt motors, bagged cars, swapped suspension, torn cars down to a shell and put em back together, ect, but something as silly as a CV axle seal has me stumped.

I ordered another seal. Thank god for Amazon Prime, it'll be here Tuesday. I'm gonna stop and get another bottle of gear lube after work tomorrow and a piece of 2" PVC to drive the seal in. I've been using a 2" socket to drive it in. I wonder if that's damaging it?

I made the same mistake. Figured out why. You only drive the seal flush with the housing, not all the way down, as intuition and the experiences of an old wrench cranker like me, would suggest. By driving the seal all the way you are off of the machined portion of the axle shaft, hence the leak. That metal plate, the dust shield, is Toyota PN41336-01010. Im going to redo mine on Wednesday.

Thanks for the part number! I appreciate it. I think mines gonna be reusable, but its good to have this number just incase.

I spent (wasted) a ton of time at work today researching and it seems like this is a common problem - driving the seal in too far.

I cant seem to find a really good picture of a where the seal should sit. Any one have a better picture than this -

    100_1495_461a09fc7fb2fcb924b7c058dceebfa482418450.jpg

Or does this at least look right? My seal is driven in probably 5mm more than this. The seal is flush with the metal around it, not sticking out like this one. This picture makes the seal look like it sticks out the same height as the outside ring of the flange. I wish I woulda paid attention when I pulled the OEM one.

I picked up some brake cleaner and a bottle of gear oil after work today. The seal should be here tomorrow. Hopefully I can get this sorted out once and for all.

I think it's like 1/8 inch if that. Look on the marks where the metal looks fresh so to speak. I drove it in 1/4 inch and it leaked pretty good.

There is one pic in that link where you can clearly see that the seal edge is flush with the housing. There is the lip that protrudes outside. I am going to just drive my new seal in flush with the housing.

Do they make a replacement bushing for the 2005 Toyota 4Runner ? I have one in the shop that the bearing has fallen apart, when another shop pulled the axle out to replace the seal...

The T4R busing should be the same part number.

Any chance that you will snap a couple of pics to show how far you drive it in this time? This thread should prove to be useful in the future... Thanks, still crossing fingers for you. Leaks drive me crazy too...

I'll snap a few pictures of mine as well - both the current position and the reinstalled position.

I'll update the first post with more info / details as I go and hopefully solve the issue.

I spoke with a service tech at my local Toyota dealer and he says that driving the seal flush with the housing will cure the leak.
Just picked up the seal, dust cap, crush washer for the fill plug (I have one for the drain plug already), and the parts guy gave me a couple of cotter pin gratis.

Great reference for the part numbers, thanks for posting that.

I just got done replacing mine again. I'll upload some before and after pictures later on tonight if I get a chance.

I drove the new seal in about half as far as the previous one, it looks like it should seal fine.

Did mine this morning. Ran errands and even took it up on the highway. Didn't leak a drop. Here are the promised pics:

this is the seal I set too deep

Proper orientation of steel disk (dust shield)

And the collet bearing remover I mentioned in a previous post. I bought a 35mm collet and forced a 1/2" bolt into it. I drilled a 1/2" hole in a piece of scrap angle iron and used two pieces of 2 x 4 for room to draw the bearing out. When you get the collet push the jaws together in a vise before trying to insert it. Hold the large hex portion and tighten the smaller hex portion to expand the jaws until snug. Pull on the 1/2" bolt until it contacts the inside edge of the bearing. Then tighten the smaller hex fully. Then draw the bearing out.

    Thanks for posting the pics.

That's where mine was (your after pic) and was still leaking. I wonder if it's the axle itself not sealing?

I drove mine in so there was about a 5mm lip sticking out. I'm gonna drive it a few days and see what happens.

What do you mean by "a 5mm lip"?
