I guess they're "locking" or more of "indexing/retention" tabs. There was a little bit of play on the perf. tube like I mentioned before. I've had no issues after 3k miles. Mine came with the short post in it, so I didn't have to reuse the one from the plastic housing.

Go back to this post to see my pics.

The original plastic one didn't require the tool to remove it. Was able to break it loose when I cracked the drain open at the same time to attach the Motiv X drain tube. That left zero drops of oil during the change.

You can see in the picture of the device on Amazon that there are no locking tabs. The stock unit has one big tab on each side and 2 extra tabs on one side for the lock to sit between. This metal unit just has one tab on each side.

From what I read here, the wrong tube is longer than the stock tube, so unless they hit it with a hammer to crush the tube, the correct tube is in there.

The service writer said this unit was better than the stock unit because it's metal and won't strip when taking it off.

Well you guys better get your story together because one member says it has it , the next member says it doesn't. And if you guys are replacing these housings and disabling the retention tabs that's not smart and in my opinion negates any small benefit in aluminum housing might be. I can't see how Toyota would warrantee you changing this housing and disabling the safety feature that they built-in. They're not going to like that. And what's the benefit again?

Yeah, like the kid at the oil change place said and the experts online agree "should be OK" that's good enough for me. I would totally gamble my new Tacoma on that. One things for sure I know mine will be fine. LOL

Is the engine block aluminum? I would slightly be concerned about the threads galling. Just assembled some aluminum fittings into an aluminum tank a few months back and the fittings seized up three threads in.

When we finally got the fitting out, the threads were gone. Luckily the bung was thick enough where we had plenty of threads to use with some chasing. We changed the assembly to brass or plated steel fittings.

This is what I'm talking about his worked yours didn't. You didn't even take the time Z 50 King to look at them and do a side-by-side comparison so you don't know you have no idea About this swap other than what you've read because you did not do it. So you really have nothing to offer more than me.

Insurance against using the wrong tools ? Hacks can bust up your aluminum one with vice grips and channel locks also.

Compare these two pictures. The tube that came from GP's truck has 4 sets of holes going along the seam. The 'other' tube has 7 sets of holes along its seam. There is no way the tube I had in the box with the metal unit was 7 sets of holes long. I opened it and it wasn't sticking that far out of the unit. And unless they took a hammer to the unit and banged it on to crush the tube, I have the correct tube installed.

I don't care much about the locking tabs. There is a rubber gasket and metal on metal contact.

Handed one of these aluminum housings to my local Toyota dealer when it was time for a Toyotacare oil change. They swapped it during the oil change without any fuss. Pretty sure the aluminum housing came from Amazon with a (correct?) short tube.
