Gas fill-up problem

Hey guys,

So I have a problem filling up my gas tank on my 2.4l 02 Tacoma with 220k on it. I insert the nozzle and can pump for maybe a half gallon before it clicks off like a normal ful tank would. It started on the second to last fill up I did, and I thought it was just the gas station but am seeing now it may be a problem with the truck itself.

I searched this forum but didn't see a clear cut answer to fixing it. I saw a guy with a Camry had a charcoal canister air hose that was clogged and simply fixed the problem by clearing it with a screwdriver. However, I'm not sure what this is and where it is located on the truck. Any guidance would be great... Thanks

 

The vent line from the tank back to the filler hole is probably clogged with a dobber or something. Crawl under and look at the tank and notice the small diameter hose running along side the main fuel tube... that's the one you should try to take off and blow out.

Yeah, my 2004 does this intermittently, too. I've just been too lazy to see of I can clear out the vent tube...

The most annoying part is just having to stand there with my hand on the filler nozzle, so now I can't smoke or juggle my fire sticks as I'm filling up.

 

I like to light road flares will I pump gas..you always meet fun people with lit flares at the pumps.

 

This gas is not near as Flammable as back in my Youth !!

 

Had the exact same problem with my truck after I bought it. All I can say is my usual tend to procrastinate payed off yet again. After about a year it just magically started filling like normal again, and haven't had a problem since. I think once or twice when it wasn't filling properly I threw a P0441 or P0440 code.

 

Turn the nozzle side ways while you pump that's what I always had to do on old mustangs

 

I fill up at so many different stations I am to the point I correct for it stopping.

Without even thinking

some pumps just are to fast

some nozzles are really different .

You need to figure out just what works best where you are .

I guess the vent hose could get kinked or crushed some how .

Being it vents when the cap is off you have to work pretty hard to get anything in there

Then if you make someone mad a Rag stuffed in the filler neck can be quite frustrating to figure out

 

Okay I got under there this evening to have a look before the thunderstorms hit I found the fuel tank, and tried to follow the main lines down on it to 6'' tubes on top that I would assume was the vent line I was looking for. However, I found two, here's a picture...
I'm assuming its the faded one to the right with the golden clamps? The Haynes manual wasn't a huge help with their diagram but said it would be about that location. I was kind of sketched out because the other guides said I could just slip it off, and this hose seems like it would need to be loosened first. Thanks again for helping out!

 

Wrong hoses. Those are for evap system. check the hoses I circled and also that valve on top of tank.

 

Charcoal canister.

 

Hey ya'll, sorry for the late response, I just wanted to make sure the problem went away for sure before reporting back.

I got under the truck and checked the lines from the charcoal canister and the first one I tried had some somewhat solid-runny gunk coming from it... no bugs or dirt or anything though. I put it on and figured I'd wait and see on the next fill-up if it was the problem. I went to another gas station but it works fine now.

Maybe it was clearing that line, or maybe it was the different gas station. I even tried both sideways fill-up (thanks mustang guy) and just holding it normal with all kinds of handle pressure and it works fine now.

Which line had the gunk?

 

I could never find a good diagram for the canister, but it was a 1/2'' diameter rubber hose without a clamp on it. I can take a picture and point it out if you want. Sorry I can't be more specific than that

 

That's cool, I will inevitably run into this problem in the future again and will check the lines first.
