My truck with the tow package/Aux trans cooler would be 200 all the time and max about 240. I did a trans flush and swapped in an aftermarket cooler haven't seen 200 since. I also use the Torque app with trans and converter temps.

Mine runs a lot lower than that. I have to push it hard towing at low speed to get the trans above 200°. Today with ambient temps at 92° and towing at maximum capacity my transmission only got to 165° at the pan and about 180° at the torque converter. On the highway cruising it usually runs about 130-150°, a little higher on the interstate.

Yeah, if it's the same as mine was, iirc that'll be your torque converter temp. You have to manually add the pan temp.

I only monitor when I go on a long trip or go wheeling. Which isn't very often. But it dosnt really bother me. I'm kinda interested in I have 33s now on factory gearing. Going to 35s with 4.88s wondering if that will make enough of a difference to even notice.

Unfortunately that is not the case for the newer 2nd gens. Not sure what year it changed but I had to program mine to work with my 2012.

Not a lot, but the temp check mode for checking atf level uses the pan reading. I like having it.

So you put in a code, and now you can monitor the fluid in the pan and the converter?

How much difference is there usually?

It depends, usually no more than 20-30°. When you're cruising with the torque converter locked the temps even out and are about the same. When you're towing, accelerating or stopped in gear with the torque converter unlocked the temp will creep up.

This thread got me interested in getting a Ultra Guage for my 02 DC 4cyl Pre Runner . I was just about to order one until I read a special note about 00 thru 04 models . it mentioned if using a Ultra gauge on 00 thru 04 models that a ABS Malfunction lite may illuminate disabling the ABS system

To fix this problem I would have to cut #14 & #6 wires or D - pin them from the sub port connector

That's a decision you'll have to make. I don't know anything regarding using an ultragauge in a first gen. Maybe start a thread about this in the first gen section? Let us know. Good luck!

Agree, though my second trans temp is I thought over 200. Could be wrong though, been a long time since I monitored it.

Yes. Locked temps were good, in use they split.

IMG_0579.jpg Stopped raining, removed the grille. Sorry for the limited light, was still very early. Large cooler is automatic transmission. Smaller cooler was oem trans but is now power steering cooler. Other photos show capped radiator ports, and intake setup.

No doubt some will comment the trans fluid will be too cold in winter or cooler months. Yes it may, so this might not be viable for all. The remote filter setup will not excessively cool the trans fluid.

I live in South Florida, most times it is pretty warm if not hot. In the cooler months, and on trips up north, there has never been an issue even when temps are in the 30s. If I noticed issues of too cold a fluid, I would have blocked a portion of the trans cooler with cardboard. Remember, the oem cooler functions 100% of the time, and the coolant temp does heat the fluid towards 190, rather than cool it.

My temps do run just slightly cooler than oem, the main difference is the temps do not creep hotter under severe use. Or in traffic like oem did.

I recently did a drain and fill with a remote filter change at 4 years and ~20k miles (80k) on truck, fluid looked and smelled brand new. I cut open the filter, it was clean, maybe a little clutch material on the media but nothing to see really. I did get some debris on the filter from cutting it open with an angle grinder and cutting wheel. I also verified that the transmission temp check mode is 97°-115°F. I will be using my ultragauge to check the fluid level from now on.
