Easy way to stiffen suspension on my 2017 TRD Sport?

    Hi all,

I picked up a 2017 Inferno Red TRD Sport - awesome truck so far.. put in the OEM Audio+ system already (what a huge improvement that was).. Anyways, I was looking to stiffen up the suspension a bit and reduce the bounciness of the truck. I don't take the truck off-roading, just use it around town, hauling the dogs, picking up stuff for home/yard projects, etc.. and a couple of people have mentioned how they feel car-sick because of the amount of roll the truck has.. Anytime I hit a bump or pothole the car does bounce around quite a bit.

What are some easy ways to stiffen up the suspension and reduce the bouncing around? I'm not looking to replace the entire suspension system and don't really care to lift the truck (although if a different set of shocks would stiffen up the suspension, I wouldn't mind a slight lift), but just looking for some minor things to do (I've read about the rear bed stiffeners, sway bars, etc). Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

    -Brett

The sport is already stiffer than the trd or but if you want even stiffer a digressive shock is a good place to start. Icon and Bilstein both use digressive profiles.

    6112s/5160s & 3-leaf AAL;ubolt flip kit;Superbumps
Block and spacer lift kit should stiffen it right up o_O no I'm kidding don't do that.

I recommend Bilstein 6112 coilovers up front ($750) with 5160s in the rear ($380) throw in a 3 leaf Add a leaf in the rear if you want a little lift. The 6112s are adjustable.

See the link below in my Sig block for a write up on this suspension combo. Lots of feedback from folks here running it.

Like all said above go with a bilstein shock. You can get away with the 5100's and a aal in the rear. Ride is fantastic.... i hated the way my truck bounced like a old Cadillac.

Sumosprings. A lot cheaper than Bilsteins.

Thanks for the replies - the Bilstein 5100's look good and aren't too expensive.. I see that the fronts are adjustable height so I can get a bit of a lift out of them, but the rears are not height adjustable.. so if you choose to lift the front by 1", I assume you'd have to choose another product to raise the rear by the same height as well, correct? Is this what the AAL would be for in the rear? Sorry for the noob questions, I'm new to trucks.

    Thanks!

I'm new to trucks so I'm not used to how bouncy the ride is.. Going over speed bumps or just going over the dip between the street and my driveway makes the car bounce around quite a bit. I know its a truck and all, but was hoping to reduce the bounciness. So will the Bilstein 5100's make a noticeable difference in this regard? I really don't care all to much about a lift.. the stock height is good as it is.

The bilsteins will stiffen up the ride and it will not bounce per say. It will ride like a truck should and not a limo.

Stock the shock is too weak to handle the springs bounce. Going stiffer spring is a step in the wrong direction. Better rear shocks will make a night and day change for the better

Part of that is the body on frame chassis. Its less stiff and therefore doesn't damp out the energy of the bumps as well. Anyway, what I mean is you probably aren't ever going to get close to a car like ride.

Many people suggest that the stock OR suspension is much smoother due to the better shocks, you could always look for some low mile take offs if you want to save money.

I'd assume they'll help, but I'm certainly no expert. All I know is, my previous truck was a 2010 4Runner, and that thing rode like a Cadillac compared to my 2016 Tacoma Sport.

Why would body on frame reduce rigidity? Ya know all big trucks use frames to pull 100k+ pounds...

Promise the frame isnt bounching, suspension is made up of basically 2 parts. A spring to carry weight and push wheels into the ground and a damper to control the springs movements.

If you dont believe me take 5 min and pull a stock shock out and put it through motion. If it doesnt feel smooth and offer even resistance on the 100lbs force you put on it, hows it do under 1000lbs

If you like the 4runner you need to go with a softer suspension not stiffer. T4R's are plush like the TRD OR Tacoma's at least in my experience. TRD Sport Tacomas are known to be stiff...it's kind of the point of the TRD "Sport" package. You could easily pick up some TRD OR bilsteins from the marketplace for $150-200 and it might get you just what you want.
