    Phew, I'm out.

Hope Toyota takes care of you, I'd be very defeated if I had this issue.

I also doubt it will be a "new" engine, most likely will just be a refurbished one.

May explain why ECP extended warranties are so much more expensive in Canada.

when subaru released their "new" sti back in 2008 this was a major problem...

many many many of the first vehicles off the assembly line had serious amount of mental in the engine case.

at the time i was a subaru tech witnessed this first hand, for all the early 2008 stis that came in for their first oil change we would use these paper filters and collect samples then send off the oil and filter to some lab.

for what these labs charge, it is never really a bad idea to have your oil tested.... could save you a head ache albeit still under warranty ect ect

the mental i saw come out of these motors, it was painful just watching...

Every new motor I have ever owned had small metallic flakes in the oil for the first 10k to 20k miles... completely normal during break-in while all the freshly machined contact surfaces marry up. Most owners don't ever see the oil during the break-in period because they rely on the dealers for oil changes. The advocates for oil changes before the first 10k interval will commonly use this anecdotal evidence as one of the key "pros" for an early drain.

Blackstone UOAs on the first couple of changes always show elevated levels of wear metals. There was a user here who recently posted a UOA of his first oil change and it demonstrated the same trend.

Dealership techs opening up your long block is more likely to cause long term damage to your motor than any metallic flakes from a break-in.

    No need to stress!

    Edit:

You know it starts out on full synthetic, right?

Your money of course, but consider spending $28 for an oil analysis on one of early changes to see if it's really necessary.

Engine break-in ends at 1000 miles according to the owner's manual. ;) Rear diff break-in ends at 500 miles.

Did you replace your rear diff oil at 500 miles? ;) Tacomas see more more ring-&-pinion failures than engine failures, in case you were wondering. :)

Not for nothing, but doesn't Toyota "break in" engines at the engine plant before they're shipped out to the truck plant? They must perform some quality control on engines before they get put in vehicles.

Yea they basically make sure the rotating assembly works and the motor makes weight by producing minimum HP / TQ requirements. Nothing that comes close to real world break-in conditions.

Doubt they even drain the oil after their testing...

In fact, I think they just put the Engines on a machine that spins the flywheel that simulates running and it is not started until the Truck comes off the assembly line.

Some how this thread went from finding shavings on a dipstick to finding shavings in oil on a new engine.

Finding shavings in a filter housing on a new engine is not uncommon. Finding shavings on a dipstick is something completely different. I find it hard to believe that the OP and dealer found shavings on his dipstick and no one but the OP was concerned.

    Am I missing something here?

Metal in the oil isn't necessarily abnormal. Generally though, if your engine makes it past the 60,000 power train warranty and you ensure the proper maintenance is done..... it'll last way longer than that. I'd probably not be to worried about it. If there was a real wear issue, you'd know before 10,000 miles.

Finding metal shavings in a new engine isn't uncommon and they won't hurt the engine because they will get caught in the filter. If you start to find metal shavings in an engine with a bunch of miles on it, well that's when you start to worry.

I have the same issue on my 4Runner. I have 6387 miles on mine. The only reason I caught it, was due to the dealer being backed up until mid month for an oil change. It wasn't until I was dumping the oil from the pan that I saw all the flakes. Then I opened up my oil filter and found more shavings and flakes. I called Toyota and they said it to have roadside assistance tow it to the dealer. It took Toyotas roadside assistance six hours to show up to get my truck when an hour was originally quoted. Awesome experience all around this being my first and most likely my last Toyota I ever purchase.

Yeah it does pay to be polite and patient but kind of frustrating when you are still paying for the vehicle.
