    Hi guys,
This is a follow up for this topic
    Here's whats happening:
    • Fuel pump breaks down every six months or so
    • Check engine codes 0171 & 0401
    • Engine gets very low millage, fuel consumption is up at least 50% above usual
    • Gas tank is clean and fuel lines are clear. Fuel filter gets changed regularly.
Any idea what could be the cause?

What does 'fuel pump breaks down' mean?

Do you run the tank till almost dry frequently?

Check voltage and ground if it is burning up the pump. Are you installing a quality pump?

I'd look at replacing all the rubber fuel lines to make sure they are not collapsing or have any issues inside that you can't see from an inspection.

P0171 indicates most likely a vacuum leak somewhere and that alone could be hurting your mileage quite a bit. Check all your hoses in the engine compartment and also your exhaust for leaks.

P0171 could also be related to a bad/dirty MAF sensor which could also affect mileage.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    To summarize your suggestions:

    • I always install the (OEM) Denso fuel pump
    • I try to keep the tank as full as possible also to protect against rust.
    • There is a small exhaust leak especially when engine is cold but nothing big.
    • checked all the hose and fuel lines, replaced suspicious parts.
    • I have a spare MAF sensor, but it did not make a difference with the existing one.
What I did not do yet is check the voltage. How should I go about that?

You should have battery voltage at the pump. Probably around 13.3v and good continuity on the ground.

If the stock pump is getting fried I'd want to find out why before spending on an upgrade.

The Walboro 190 pump is the one you want for 1st gens. It comes with the URD 7th injector kit that's offered for supercharged motors.

But why on a stock truck. Original design works great if its a quality pump. OEM being quality.

True, I was more just stating that Walboro does make an upgraded pump for 1st gens (someone above me quoted one that was for 2nd gens). I doubt if it would be of any benefit though on a stock truck over a new OEM pump.

Yes exactly. Besides, I'm leaving the country and selling my truck. I just don't want to fuck the new owner up with this nasty problem.

I wonder if the quality of the gas you get down yonder might be a issue

Just what kind of failure ??

    Your saying burned up .

Have you looked at any of these failed pumps ??

My stock one is at 225,000 miles.

I wonder if the Denso Pumps made in China have the same quality as other made in China goodies .
