Fold-A-Cover?

I've been looking at tonneau covers for my 2011 DCSB, and have been liking the Extang Solid Fold 2.0. Today while looking around, I stumbled on a YouTube video comparing the Bakflip G2 and the Fold-A-Cover G4 Elite. I have never heard of Fold-A-Cover, but their cover has everything I'm looking for in a cover- access to front and back of the bed independently without unfolding the whole cover, lockable access, and a lower profile (at least on YouTube) than the Extang, but not flat like the Bakflip, so I don't need a sketch gutter system. Kickers with the Fold-A-Cover were the ability to access the back of the bed without dropping the tailgate, a one-latch system to open the back panel, and I have to admit their personal caddy was kinda cool. Does anyone have experience with these covers? It seems too good to be true, which makes me sad...

I've had mine for about 2 years and love it. I bought mine after reading this post as I wanted to retain use of the side rails and I didn't want drain tubes hanging down in the bed. Mine came with a tailgate seal which greatly reduced the amount of water intrusion. I also installed a pop & lock so I didn't use the footman's loop that came with it.

I have a long bed and with the cover full open I can still haul quite a bit.



I use Chemical Guys V7 on it and it has held up very well. I also lube the locks with WD40.

It did take a little adjusting during initial install but I am very happy with the purchase, I would definitely buy again.

 

Nice. Glad its working out. I've got a 2017 so my tailgate locks. I'll try the wd40 and that protectant spray.

 

So does this seal well at the tailgate given the 2nd Gen tailgate cap sits lower that the bed rails?

 

It seals well but lots of water comes in through the sides of the tailgate, after I installed the tailgate seal the water intrusion was much less than before.

 

I've had the G4 for about 5 years. At first, I really loved it. It's relatively secure and dry, folds easily, removes without a lot of effort and looks good. However, about a year ago it started falling apart. The rear panel has a very significant dip in the middle, almost like it's going to break in half. It doesn't fold nearly as easily as it did at first. Also, the rubber strips covering the hinges are all loose and all the panels are oilcanning (the aluminum skin is separated from the inner foam liner). Overall, I'm pretty disappointed that such an expensive cover only lasts a few years. I can't recommend it.

 

Ive had a couple hard folding covers on previous trucks. Installed an Extang soft folding cover on my Tacoma and will never go back to a hard cover.

 

I have no experience with the Foldacover, but when I was searching for covers, it seemed like the best choice, feature-wise. I was pretty close to ordering one on Black Friday weekend, but in the end I decided to go with a Leer 100XQ shell instead of a cover.

 

Bought my foldacover last year, and love it. Hopefully no failure down the road long term as reported above...so far so good though. Little to no water leaks: I didn't install the tailgate seal (did install the rubber flaps under front and rear panels) and haven't had any issues at all. Wife parks outdoors at work, and we've had rain/snow/sleet/hail this winter, bed stays completely dry during weather and highway travel. If your concerned about security I would get a pop /lock system...the standard tongue and bar with locking cover keeps people honest, but you could smoke this cover in about two seconds with some leverage. All in all I've been really happy with mine for a tonneau style cover. If you're looking for tonneau vs. shell...that's a different story. Good luck!

 

I am considering purchasing the fold a cover. I see two mentions of "installing a pop & lock so I didn't use the footman's loop that came with it".
Can you explain what the pop & lock option is? Thank You!

 

I have the Bakflip G2. I don't have a bunch of experience with covers but I can imagine there are better options out there. Im planning on getting canopy and the cover came with the truck when I bought it. It looks great on the vehicle. I have had water come in but VERY little really. I would not feel confident putting anything water sensitive in the back with it though. The tubes that run to the bed look a little aged and not impressed with that particular design. Its strong and for the few uses I had with it it works just fine. I Ould say its a pain to open all the way to access near cab, and the girlfriend doesn't bother with it as its to heavy and awkward for her, she's also on the short side so that isn't helping. Theres my 2 anyway

 

It's a tailgate lock that replaces the factory handle. Tacoma tailgates are very easy to steal, so the Pop & Lock is one part of the solution to prevent that. Another is the hose clamp mod.

Think twice about the Fold-A-Cover. Mine has pretty much fallen apart after 5 years. Very disappointing.

 

Sorry to hear that Jonah, the only issue I've had with mine was one of the seals started coming apart. I emailed fold-a-cover and had a new seal free of charge 2 days later:

 

I just bought the Extang solid fold 2.0 along with a pop a lock and so far I'm pretty happy. I didn't want so dumb drain tubes in the bed or an inside gutter system. I bought mine through a truck accessory dealer cuz he had it in stock along with the pop a lock. He said if I wanted the fold a cover that I would have to buy direct from them. I had the previous version of the Extang solid fold and used it for many years with no problems. I went through the car wash with my new one and it seemed pretty dry and only a few drops of water seeped through.

Only other brand I'd get is the Bakflip MX tonneau cover
