Hey guys, after all the work I did to get my truck back to normal, today the 4wd indicator started blinking. And it hasn't stopped. I unplugged it from the actuator and plugged it back in. No luck. Any suggestions? I know it blinks when it's transitioning into or out of 4wd so I'm nervous it will engage randomly while driving...

 

I'm assuming that you already cycled the 4WD knob...

 

Yes, the switch does nothing that I can see, feel, or hear...

 

Did you check the fuse?

 

Fuse is fine. Just did something odd though. I turned my truck off then put the switch in 4 hi and when I turned the truck back on I heard clicking under the glove box and the LO flickered then 4 hi engaged (no blinking). But I had to shut it off and turn the switch to get it to disengage. Still blinking.

 

That's strange. You should not be able to change the actuator while the truck is off. Did you ever do any mods to the switch where you could possibly have continuous power to it?

 

You might have misunderstood. 4wd engages after I start it. But only when it's in 4 hi before cranking.

 

So nothing would disengage once it was on and stuck in 4hi?

 

I'd start with the switch itself. Could be just a bad connection. If that does not fix the problem then I would think it is the actuator itself (a common problem on our Tacos). I've added a link to help guide you with the wiring.

Hey Peyton, not to overthrow any other suggestions but I’d bet money that it’s your front actuator on the diff. Mine did the same thing to me multiple times over the years. The actuator is a poor design unfortunately and is prone to getting moisture into it. Once that happens it’s downhill as the all the electronics within it begin to corrode.

I had luck most of the time pulling the actuator off and disassembling it. Then you can clean it up as best as possible and smother dielectric grease all over it. I’d suggest that first before buying a new one as they’re close to 300 new.
