Toyota Oil, Synthetic vs Conventional for short trips

I think you may be way over thinking and stressing about the OCIs and oil types, with Toyota trucks just change out every 5k miles with the recommended viscosity 0w20 and don't worry about voiding the warranty, even if you changed it out at 10k miles the warranty wont be effected.

So after looking through all of those oil analysis reports, it seems like it's very common for people to run full synthetic at very low mileage. I'm assuming that nobody has had any issues with switching the full synthetic at low mileage. Does anybody have a counter to that statement?

 

I think most here have been running it since day 1. If the previous owner of yours used the recommended oil (0-20) yours has been synthetic from day 1 too. If you want to continue to run the recommended oil, your only choice will be synthetic. A majority of new vehicles today take 0-20, which means synthetic from day 1. Nothing to worry about.

 

I ran my truck on PYB (penzoil yellow bottle, conventional 5w30) for 30k then switched to synthetic. Currently at 83k and almost 11 years old, no issues. Mobil 1 usually, currently using Penzoil Platinum. I would have no issues running synthetic in a new engine, qnyla has ran Mobil 1 in his 4.0 since new, he now has over 400k miles on the original engine.
Edit: my truck was 3 years old when I switched from conventional to synthetic. I had the dealer change the oil last year when I had some work done, they used conventional, which is fine. There is no problem with switching back and forth between conventional and synthetic in my experience.

Get it good and hot for at least a half hour, at least once a week... that should burn out any condensate in the oil from the short trips.

 

Just use what the owner's manual calls for. No need to overthink it...

 

@JefferyB, the carfax days conventional 5W-30 the entire time except the past two change which were synthetic blend.

People listen to the oil company hype and then pay them way too much money for stuff that isn't needed. Are you really going to keep this truck for 200,000 plus miles? (really?) Do you think a new owner is going to care you spent too much money during your ownership and will pay extra? Uh, yeah that's not happening. I just bought a used Honda for my son with over 200K miles. The previous owner used dinosaur oil and the engine runs great.

I have a 5 mile commute too and I don't give a second thought to it. (Other than to enjoy the no hassle trip to work every morning.) I change the oil every 5K with the cheapest name brand oil I can find and let it go at that. Will my lack of worry cause the engine to explode at some point, no. Will the engine last for a million miles, probably but driving around 10K miles per year it's going to take a 100 years.

(now to completely contradict myself I did try something different on my last oil change. PepBoys had full synthetic Mobile1 on sale for $3.00 more than the name brand dinosaur oil. So being one to bust bullshit at every opportunity, I bought it. It been about 2K miles and I can tell you that I can't tell a bit of difference, nada, nothing, nope. When I get to 5K miles I'm going to send a sample out to see if I can extend the life of the oil out to 10K miles. Now THAT would be an argument for synthetic oil.)

 

Good point. I'm just a maintenence freak. When I buy something I like to take good care of it, so I can rely on it. It would be nice to keep the truck for 20 years or 200,000+ miles. My Cobalt had 144,000 trouble free miles on it, and if it was not for Irma I would still driving it. I don't take care of my things for the resale value of it. That's like not having sex with your girlfriend because you want the next boyfriend to think that she's barely been touched. Screw that, I'm getting mine, but I'm going to treat her right.

For the win!!! Wow. 400 thousand miles!!! Used Mobil 1 EP from the start. Ok. That pretty much settles it. I'll switch now.

 

I've been using Mobile 1 since new. Change the oil and filter every 10K and put a new filter on at 5K. I'm 10 years in and 183,000 miles and expect at least another 100K before the engine needs attention. I buy 5 qt jugs at Walmart for ~$25 and change my own.

I used to think either oil was just as good, but you could go roughly twice as long between oil changes with synthetic. But I've seen too many tests that show synthetic is better period. Can you get 200K with conventional oil? Yes you can, probably more. But no matter how long it lasts with conventional oil, synthetic will make it last longer. And by going to a longer change interval you'll spend less on oil changes over the life of the vehicle.

 

Mobil 1 synthetic is actually cheaper than conventional oil since they have annual rebates that result in $10/5 quarts. It’s a no brainer at that price.

I change my oil twice a year and I take tons of short trips (<5 miles at a time). Only have 56k in 7 years.

 

I always change my own oil with Mobil 1. The only reason why I'm letting the dealer do it is to keep the stupid warranty. Makes me sick tossing over the keys. I just envision them only letting the oil drain for 30 seconds like I use to see when I worked at Tire Kingdom, and then plugging it back up while the other one is farting in my driver seat and smoking a cigarette. Lol The second this stupid warranty is over, I'm back to doing it myself.

 

Don't let the warranty be the reason for letting the dealer change your oil. It is a myth that the warranty can be voided (see link below) by someone other than the dealer doing the work...research it. If they were legally allowed to operate that way they would be charging $200 for an oil change, what would stop them?
