IMG_0296.jpg Anyone had luck dealing with pin sized surface rust like in my picture? It's on each door, and I'd like to deal with it before it potentially becomes a larger issue.

That looks like iron deposits or fallout maybe. I'm not 100% positive I'm correct on this but I would likely be steering you in the right direction. Check this stuff out.

looks a lot like rail dust (from train transport when the truck was new)....or some sort of industrial fallout as mentioned above. I bet clay bar will take it right out.

Is it on the surface of the paint, or is the paint broken and that's the actual metal of the truck?

Doing a decon with an iron remover product like IronX will prevent this from occurring. If you have a few rust specs already, I’m sure there are more you can’t see. Get ahead of it and do a decon ASAP.

If the rust goes deep, I’d leave it alone (aside from a decon). Or maybe clean it out gently with a tooth pick and put a speck of touch up paint on it (after decon and polishing).

You're in so cal, it's just metallic particles of some sort on the paint that have oxidized. I use a clay bar on my vehicles after our harsh winters, works great, followed by a sealer or wax

As others have said. Clay bar.
Metallic particles get embedded in the paint over tine and rust, but they jist sit on the surface of the paint. Its not your truck rusting.

I hate to disagree with many of you, but speaking as one who lives in the road salt capital of the world, I think the OP has at least some legitimate chips in the paint which have led to actual rust spots. The reason I say this is the volcano shape of several of the bigger spots. That type of shape generally means something hit the paint surface causing the base metal to become exposed the elements. If not caught early enough, the bare metal will start to corrode and the rust will creep under the painted surface, continuing to get worse. (That's where the volcano shape comes from.)

Although some of the smaller spots may indeed be "rail dust" or similar surface contamination - which can easily be removed with clay or light polish - the "real rust" must be treated differently. I'd recommend using a product like Loctite SF754 Rust Neutralizer (applied with a toothpick to each spot) to neutralize the rust. After curing, I'd carefully apply touch up paint to seal the void. The reason I'd shy away from polishing the volcanos is that one risks trapping polish in the void(s) and preventing the SF754 from fully neutralizing the rust or preventing the paint from adhering to the surface. That would just make the problem harder to solve.

May be some small chips in there along with surface rust. Nothing that can't be maintained.
