Shifting into neutral kills tranny! What?

From time to time (esp when gas hit a all time high) I bump my auto trans into neutral when coming up to a red light or going down a good size hill. Mainly to save on gas and/or brakes.
Well I went into the dealership today to ask if they have a re-flash or TSB for the 2008 Taco's. And of course the service writer had no idea what I was talking about, Tacomas have never had tranny issues. So I tell him all the mis-shifts, searching gears, & holding gears issues I have. And that the searching for gears happens when I use N down hills or sitting at a light.
He tells me that shifting into N will void my tranny warranty. Something about the tranny that it loosing suction and kills the insides if done for more then a collective 9 miles. Set appt for tomorrow to reset the 9+ miles back to 0

Anyone else ever hear or been told this before?

I don't think the fluid is moving if it is in N, something like the pump is not working when in N.

I've heard of this before. I think the pump for the tranny fluid is on the front of the tranny meaning it has to be spinning with the engine to be getting lubricated so that would be basically starving the tranny of fluid.

When did they include the 2008's in the TSB? I thought it was just the 09-10's.

I wander if it is hard on 6 speeds as well? I shift into N all the time when coming to a stop sign.

I don't think it affects the manuals. Where's Chris he knows this stuff.

^^^^^^ I'm guessing because of the shitty shifting issues he mentioned that the reflash addresses.

Manual has no pump, the gears just slosh around in the fluid.

I don't see how it would matter if the fluid is moving or not. If you are in Neutral there is NO mechanical linkage is there?

And if the pump is in the front, then it would be moving with the engine at all times. I just don't see any reason that it would screw up a transmission.

Furthermore, how many automatic pick-up trucks have you seen towed using a front wheel dolly? They have to put the truck in N in order to tow it. I call BS on it man.

Engine would be off. Heat would be a non issue I should think. Otherwise you wouldn't require towing.

Your tranny is still connected to the drive shaft right? When they are on a front wheel dolly I'm almost positive that the drive shaft is supposed to be unbolted.

Check this out go to the precautions.

I realize the tranny is mechanically linked to the drive shaft, when in Neutral the back half of the tranny is not linked to the front half mechanically is it?

Are you saying the drive shaft isn't linked to the engine? I'm a little confused. Just check the link obviously there's a problem towing rear wheel drive cars with the drive shaft in place on a dolly.

The engine isn't the only thing that produces heat in a vehicle. I'm not trying to be a smart ass but have you heard of a transmission cooler?

Here's my question, if the tranny overheats while coasting in neutral, then what are you supposed to do WHEN YOUR GAS PEDAL STICKS!?!?!?!

Jesus christ the Japanese hate us...

    EDIT: Sarcasm implied

I think you have bigger worries if your pedal is stuck than a transmission failure but you could just turn the engine off and flip the key back to the on position I would think.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
my question would be which side of their asses did they pull the 9 miles thing from....and also if it is a mechanical issue w/ going a collective 9 miles in N, how can it be reset? it intentionally grenades at the 9 mile mark unless the trip meter on it is reset?

If you are in Neutral going down a hill, your tires are moving much faster that what your engine is right? Because you remove the engine's resistance from the equation. Unless an auto tranny is different. I have never delved into the realm of auto's. But it would make sense to me that when in D, R, or P that there is a mechanical linkage to the engine. When in N there is not.

The tranny burning up makes sense, but it seems like another reason to get a manual. :D
