5VZ-FE OEM Oil Filter Question

So I'm about due for an oil change on my 2000 3.4 5VZ-FE and have decided that I should probably stop buying cheap Fram filters. Figured I should go with some OEM Toyota ones instead. I know the Toyota part number for the 3.4 is

90915-YZZD1, but I was wondering if the longer filter (PN

$53 90915-YZZD3 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)

90915-YZZD3) will work as well. My mom has a 2003 4runner with the 4.7 V8 and the YZZD3 filter is the one that fits hers. I saw a 10 pack on Amazon for a good price and I thought it would be nice to get that and just use one filter (YZZD3) for both vehicles. Any thoughts?

Those 2 numbers are roughly equivalent. I never checked, but how much longer can we go? Is there anything outwards from the filter that will prevent it from being too long?

 

napa 1034 filter is a 1.1 inches longer. but is the thread on our filters really 3/4-16?

 

Those are the old part numbers. The only difference is the tundra filter is about an inch taller and of course more filter matters.

 

So that extra 1 inch in length of the v8 filter won't create any fitment issues on the 3.4?

 

I am not sure but. both tread pitch are the same btw, 3/4-16.

i use the d3 filter on my taco. its a little tighter, but no issues with it. but more filtering media is welcomed.

 

The thought of using a Tundra filter led me on a internet research odyssey that divulged there's pretty minimal if any detectable benefit, possibly some risk, and a bunch of hair splitting when it comes to using oil filters that are larger than oem spec. YMMV

 

You can run the larger filter I always ran WIX 51516 on my 5vz, any larger though and it starts rubbing on a rubber line down there. Either power steering or oil cooler line I can't remember. Also it's a pain in the deck to get it screwed on right because you end up fighting that hose. Don't even bother trying to prefill the filter.

As for how much longer? It all depends on oil type, driving style, and conditions, but generally I was changing my oil every 10k or 10 months. If I had been doing a lot of dirt driving then changed it at 7k or 6 months.

If you really want to know take an oil sample and send it to Blackstone for analysis, they'll tell you how much lubricity is left in it's life.

It's worth noting I ran 10w-40 oil for my longer intervals. Brand doesn't matter as much but I was using Amsoil signature.

Yes, I've been running the D3 on my truck no problem. Makes it possible to dump an even 6 quarts in the sump which is the whole reason I do it. Don't be too harsh on Fram filters, though, the Fram Ultra synthetic filter is perhaps the best oil filter money can buy on the market right now. I am going to try one next oil change. The problem with Toyota filters is they aren't very efficient, 50% at 20 microns is pretty abysmal compared to the Fram Ultra which is 99% efficient at 20 microns. It all comes down to what you want more, excellent flow and awesome filtration or excellent flow and mediocre filtration? Amsoil filters are great too but not worth the extra cost when the Ultra can be had for about $9 whereas a OEM runs around $6 and Amsoil around $20. I've gotten all my info off of the Bob is the Oil Guy forums, those guys live and breathe all things oil and filters so I tend to trust what they have to say. I used to be a Fram hater until I started reading around on that site and turns out, I've been wrong all these years! Nothing wrong with OEM filters, they will do the job just fine, there's just better options for the money.

 

Wait, this is the first I’m hearing that the Yota filters only 50%... do you have a reputable link that shares this information? 50% is pretty low for the Toyota factory to be okay with, IMO.

Someone posted it on BITOG awhile back, it was a test done on various filters by Amsoil a few years back. The Toyota and Honda filters performed the worst of all the filters tested. I'll keep looking for it and post it when I find it.
