Okay, installed a pvc catch can about 3 months ago. This is the results after 6,000 km's. In the first picture the can is half full - gross orangey brown crap. Last pic is of the sludge at the bottom. I would say this is a great mod and investment. Sure glad I am not running that crap through my motor.

I keep dragging my feet on putting one in.

I need to do it sooner rather than later.

Which did you purchase and how did you mount it.

I had a Bob's autosports in my mustang and was thinking of getting one to work in the truck.

Yes that's the "filter" material. Supposed to capture the oil particulants in the air being blown through

I used an existing hole on the outer wall drivers side by the master brake cylinder also drilled a hole and used a self taping screw. Bought cheap knock off catch can from china. Think $40 bucks

I use an app called geek - cheap china goods - sometimes I get a lot if free stuff. I wait over 30 days and complain they give it free. Most times it take close to 30 days

Oil /air separators work awesome in collecting oil mist/vapor and the amount of fluid collected is amazing

I used to run one on my street / strip car and would collect a few ounces oil every few weeks . I 've since removed it replacing it with a Pan Evac set up and it works 100% better than a PCV system but not as good as a vaccuum pump set up

Naysayer here. I’ve never ran one on any of my many trucks (or cars, including turbo’ed models) and never have I experienced adverse effects.

But I do keep up on my maintenance and change my oil regularly and get it analyzed to make sure all is running ok. If my motor blows up one day, I’ll look into it.

Just FYI, there are contaminants floating around everywhere - engine, trans, diffs, and for those using K&N, and unusually high amt in the intake :))). Which is one of the main reasons we have oils, fluids and filters—cleaning and trapping all them icky stuff. That’s their job. And why we have to change them every so often.

The adverse effects tend not to be "blow up your engine" serious. It's more of a slow descent into madness, and the cleaning of the sludge can be a pain in the butt. Turbo cars with intercoolers feel it a lot more, but every car will see sludge start to form.

Your intake manifold gets a slick of oil in it, your valves get a crust of oil baked onto them, and you potentially start to clog passages like EGR or the PCV itself, which causes annoying issues. I think it can also start to crust up your piston crowns, and it will eventually start to sap power because of diminished flow. We're not talking huge amounts unless you really let it crust over, but still...

If you plan on running a motor 100K+ miles, there's really no reason not to, given the cheap cost.

Older cars never had their PCV routed into the intake, but when emissions restrictions got more thorough car manufacturers decided the best thing to do was sneak it back into the intake manifold and burn it, probably because they thought asking the average car owner to empty a catch can every oil change was too big of a deal.:notsure:

High performance cars run separators in their PCV tract to condense the oil back out and put it back into the sump.

In the winter, motorcycle folks freak when they see milky oil in the sight glass. I used to also, until I had to pull a side cover in the middle of winter. Milky / foamy oil clung to all the exterior surfaces, but the hot interior surfaces and moving parts only had clear, good oil on them.

I had a catch can on the Ural because I built an air box for it. I saw similar stuff as the OP. The reason was that it was exposed, not in the roasty toasty crank case where the water stays as a vapor.

So, I will be a naysayer, as long as I am getting the motor up to temp and taking a long drive once every few weeks.

I am not going to judge either way. It's everyone's choice to run or not to run one.

I personally think they are useless.

My question is, why do those that do decide to run one try so hard to prove their worth? Especially when there are hundreds of examples on just this one forum of motors that go 300K plus... with no catch can or problem.

If you think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, great. Go for it! Just don't try to sell your beliefs to everyone else because without proof like long term testing (from a real manufacturer) that has the funds to buy dozens of engines and do several thousand hour tests. A friend of a buddy who used one with no issues is not a test. It's a data point.
