Alternative oil filter sizes for Tacoma

Just curious, I know there are various oil filter sizes that will fit the same engine.

Does anyone have a list or knows a source of alternative part number oil filters that will fit the 4.0 V6?

Of course the Fram 3614 is the part # that is factory size as well as other brands that have their own part number, but if that part number were not available (for whatever reason) what alternative oil filter will work?

The seal ring diameter and thread size being the key factor in fit but there can be some variables to volume and dimensions that can vary and still yield effective protection I would assume.

So in a pinch or even as a better product, what alternative part number filters (brand) will work on the 4.0 V6?

 

That part number is used by all the filter manufacturers. They may have a different prefix, but the last digits are the same.

 

Buy and Afe Pro Dry and be done with it. No oiling needed.

51516xp is same length but smaller diameter. Both fit the oil cooler base and both increase oil capacity.

 

OEM is your best choice.

 

It's not about the engineering, it's about the FEELING.

In all actually though I don't understand the obsession with OEM parts, yes some are better, but why buy an aisin pump from the dealer when you can get one direct from them, same shit different box.

Keep in mind, Toyota uses parts that are made to meet a certain spec at a certain price point. There's plenty better out there but Toyota doesn't want to pay for it because the customer doesn't want to pay for it.

Why use a larger filter when the small one does the job? Why fly 1st class when economy still gets you there? Why run mobil1 when Quaker state is still meets SAE/API?

@Key-Rei Bad analogies there. There is a big difference between 1st class and Economy; you only have two choices (sometimes Business class on larger planes); and you are not paying for better pilot or better plane, only extra services.

I agree not to buy OEM parts unless you have no other choice.

@koditten Ph3614 is not a part # "...used by all the filter manufacturers". The following reputable oil filter manufacturers have their own numbering system; go to their website to look up OEM equivalents: Purolator, Wix, Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Baldwin, Bosch, and Denso, but to name a few.

Generally speaking, larger is better in oil filtration, if for no other reason than to increase volume of oil. Intsead of 5.7 qts, I put 6.5 in my Taco.

Fram PH8a, is the largest practical size filter you can fit in the V6 Tacos. I currently have a Purolator One PL30001 (blue), a synthetic filter, which I run with 10K oil changes. You can cross-reference these part #s into the various oil filter websites I mentioned above for their equivalent sized part #s. Denso makes Toyota's oil filters.

I easily get 300k using Fram filters. In ready for my next truck at that time.

I would turn that around and say you should buy OEM unless the aftermarket is demonstrated to be better. I totally agree there's no reason to buy Aisin, Denso, NGK in a Toyota box, but you should stick with the OEM suppliers unless there's something better. I bought a Toyota because of the reputation of reliability and the reason for that is the sum of the parts.

A couple of decades ago the reason a Honda or Toyota was better than a Big 3 was Aisin and Denso made (or were asked to make anyway) superior waters pumps, ball joints and piston rings than Fel-Pro or MOOG. It may not be true anymore, though.

As far as oil filters, from what I've seen the standard Denso from Thailand is a pretty decent value. Not as good as some on purely technical points, definitely better than others. You can do a lot worse and if you don't want to think about it the one you get from the dealer is fine. To do better will cost you (and I don't disagree, $6 vs. $12 isn't huge and worth it) and doesn't always mean you're getting something better. I've always used the Denso on my trucks but I'll also use the NAPA Gold and WIX filters.

Has anyone looked into seeing if there is a CAT filter replacement that will fit the 2017s? Or any of the 3rd Gens? Both fuel and oil would be ideal. Don't want to nerd out too much but CAT filters run at 90%-95% efficiency down to 4 or 5 microns. Probably not a consideration if you're not towing, doing any heavy off-roading, or just like to abuse your rig.

I know that kits are available for Ford/Chevy/Dodge diesel engines, haven't seen anything for gas engines though.

I know it can be done. I know there is a filter that is the same but longer. I remember early 90's Supras took a long filter, I just forgot the Fram number.

This may be it, but thats for Fords. May work for both.

 

If PH8A fits, thats the one. Ill have to try that next time. Thats a big ass filter.

 

OP i question why you feel the need for a larger filter.

The OEM D3 filter has shown to have significantly more filter media area than all other competitors of similar size.... How long are you going between oil/filter changes?
