I plan to convert my 98 Toyota Tacoma prerunner 2wd automatic 4 cyl to a 4x4 Manual V6

I need know exactly what parts fit an what I need I’ve already planned on getting a 3.4L V6 and a V6 5speed 4wd transmission but I don’t know where to go from there someone help

Could you be slightly more specific because even if I got one for the parts I’m still left in the dark as to what parts need to be converted an what parts are good as is

 

I would stick with a 98-00 parts truck, ideally a 98 to make everything as simple as possible unless you find a complete truck where all the components you need are in good working order. Before 98 you get weird hard to find ecu's and after 00 you get throttle by wire parts that are hard to find. You're at least going to need the exhaust, wiring harness for the cab and the engine, driveshaft or driveshafts if you want to go 4x4, the front diff, axles, spindles, etc. You need a different truck basically because by the time you buy a donor and swap everything over you will have added a bunch of parts that you should replace at the time and then install them it's going to take way longer and cost probably the same - ask me how I know lol.

This is one hell of a project man. You basically need everything. Dash harness, ECU, body harness, manual drivetrain components, etc etc. You will have to do a fair bit of fabricating to the truck for the engine mounts, and the transmission mounts as the automatic and v6 counterparts mount differently than the latter. There's no feasible way to do this without a parts truck it will cost you way much and be too much of a pain to find everything. You are essentially replacing the entire drivetrain and electronics of the truck down to the frame.

 

I actually wanted to go down the same path, minus the manual swap part. I'm eventually going to do the v6 swap but I'm saving up for a parts truck. Looking at Copart and DashHub auctions the average salvage title Tacoma sells for roughly $3,000 with shipping and auction fees included.

I actually took a couple classes at the local community colleges to prepare for something like swapping the engine. It still hasn't scratched the surface of how involved doing something like that would be.

I mean that's not stopping me from doing it, that's just one hell of a project to do at one time. Not an easy project if you don't have experience with electrical diagnosis, welding/fabricating, and extensive drivetrain knowledge.

At that point it would be easier and cheaper to just sell the truck and buy the truck you want.

It's kind of like asking how much a Lamborghini costs. If you have to ask it's not going to happen. I'm doing a straight bolt on engine and trans swap minus some exhaust work that needs welding and there's enough parts that I've replaced already that if I didn't enjoy learning about this stuff then it never would have been worth it or would have happened. If the guy that started this thread is serious about it then by all means, but you've got a lot to learn

I'm a teacher so I should say do it! I just want you to know the reality of it if you don't have any knowledge of how to do this stuff - it's not that it's necessarily hard, but it does take time, dedication, and skill!

 

There is a lot parts Tacos out here on the East coast with rusted frame

 

Not sure where you live but if you wanted to stay 4cyl I have a line on a manual trans and transfer case. It would be an exact fit for you.

 

If you have to ask a broad question like that, this project is likely to completely overwhelm you very quickly.

Is this a fun project to learn or do you rely on this vehicle to get around? Your truck will be in pieces for months and months.

Sell your current truck, buy the one you want.

 

Watch out for the transmission cross-member location. The v6 was moved 3 inches or so forward from the 4 cylinder. So moving the cross-member, or making a new cross-member is a possibility.

 

You'll be able to spot them sometimes in someone's yard, on their acre, or on craigslist. Again, you'll want the entire wrecked truck.

 

I would consider to find a rolled/ mildly wreaked truck with what drivetrain you want and swap cab and body parts over. Either way....your in for a big project.

 

Probably be easier to buy a truck and swap yout body to it

 

I just spent day two installing four wheel drive into a prerunner. All I have left is the trans fluid and the rear driveline. Its a bit of work, but hay if you like working on toyotas, it's aaallllll right.
