Ok guys...I want to fit 285 70 17 nitto ridge grapplers on my stock 2016 trd sport wheels with a lift level kit without any rubbing in the front at all....so the big question is what size level kit do I need front and back. Also I live in Massachusetts where they have just put into play the most evil state inspection known to man. As it stands legally you can only lift your truck 2 inches...this is why I need to know how much to lift for the 285s. Give me your knowledge guys!

You will need wheel spacers or new wheels otherwise that tire size will rub your suspension. It'll also more than likely rub the fenders and require the cab mount chop as well. If 2" is the max go to 2". Most guys run 2.5-3" of lift and still need to trim to avoid rubbing.

You won't need much lift to fit them, but you will need to do some trimming and alignment adjustment if you want no rubbing at all.

You will probably want to lift the front somewhere between 1-2", you will need to trim your inner fenders, do a cab mount chop, and get upper control arms to fix the geometry and allow for different alignment specs.

Make sure that you are calculating the formula right. I have the double cab long bed and I figured that I can get away with 4" of lift over stock. If you have a short bed, the number will be a little different, but it's certainly not a "NO MORE THAN 2 INCHES" law.

I just went Saturday he took pics of my front and rear plate, hooked up to my OBDII connection, waited for the computer to say all done and I was out. In at 9:54 and out at 10:02. 3 inch lift and lots of aftermarket fog, and ditch lights.

Lift isn't the issue with 285s. Tacoma's have the height for 285s from the factory. It's the width that is a problem and it's a problem whether you are at stock height or 3" lift. If you want no rub you are going to have to do a cab mount chop as well as trim some of the plastic in the wheel wells.

Crazy that 2" lift law. That wouldn't fly down here.

Yep. People aren't thinking. Your suspension has travel. Even lifted, when you hit a bump the suspension will compress back down to what it was stock! Also spacers make it worse lol...

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Maybe if you plan to never drive over a speed bump.

Ok so let’s say I add a 1.25 inch spacer? Would I still need to use leveling kit? Btw I never plan on off-roading or taking on aggressive terrain except for snow.

    1.25"

You're right, but the normal Monday - Friday A to B type of driving you won't be compressing the suspension all that much. Just in and out of dips like a driveway or parking lot where you'll rub regardless or stock or lifted. To make a turn there is an advantage with a lift to clear the larger tires.

Yes you will still see an advantage with a leveling kit, or better yet something like a Bilstein 5100.

You could go with 255 sized tires. You won't need spacers or a lift but you'll still have a 33". Not as wide as a 285 but the same height and minimal to no clearance issues.

Rough Country 3" spacer lift w/ shocks 285 KO2's wrapped around 16' ProComp Series 7069 Misc. bibbidybob lights

3" Rough-Country lift with rear shocks should be more than enough, proof is in the pudding (and the pics)

Maybe on a 2nd gen. 285s arent that big tho. Barely an inch taller than stock tires which adds a mere half inch to the top...plenty of vertical clearance even when stuffed on stock 3rd gen suspension. Its width thats a problem.

285s are ~32.5" tall. 255/80r17 is ~33.1" tall. I put 255s on stock wheels and stock suspension on my second gen, and took it wheeling the next day. Just had to move the front of the fender liner forward a couple inches, but that's it. Now technically that would mean it's not good "from the factory" but 2 minutes of non permanent modification is close enough in my book.

Ok so now I’m intrigued...how many of you have put 255 80 17s on your 3rd gens? Want to hear about problems/ rubs/ lack there of
