I'll have to dig something up. I just installed an FJ transfer case. Only thing I hate about my truck is that it's an auto. One of these days I going to convert it to 5-spd.

Nice! Yeah, I have the 5spd in my access cab and my dad has a 4spd auto in his double cab, and mine has a noticeable amount of more grunt. I guess that extra gear really helps

Yea, the lower 1st and 2nd help and the gear spacing is a little closer. Also, top gear in the manual is lower than in the auto. I have 4.88's and it's still a bitch turning 32's. Any headwind really slows me down and going over 70mph really isn't an option. I want a RTT but I'm not convinced my truck can push it through the air at highway speeds.

Damn.. I thought 4.88's would be enough even with the auto. A RTT would definitely make that 4 banger work hard, idk if Id want to run one..

I have about 600-700lbs constant load on my 5spd and I have been thinking about 4.88s for when I jump up to 33s or maybe 34s. Do you think this would be low enough with the manual? I've been considering 5.29s but I've read on here that they don't make them for the Gen 2 trucks

I think 4.88's is enough for a 5-spd. You're still turning a heavy tire. I have E-load tires and they are heavy. I think my next tire will be C-load, there aren't a lot of choices though.

I also have e loads 265/75/16s on mine right now and the truck handles them just fine. I love a E range tire even though they're a lot heavier. I pulled an inch long self tapping screw out of mine just this past weekend, and it didn't even spring a leak. This is right up my alley

I would not say my handles them fine. Even with 4.88's it is painful to get up to speed on even the smallest grade. It's near impossible to stay at 70mph on the highway going up a 3% grade.

Yeah mine will hold 75 in 4th gear on the 7% grades near me on the interstate, even with the 600lbs load I mentioned earlier. If I drop below 70 though, I have to drop down from 4th to 3rd to maintain speed..

How much extra weight do you have on your auto?

Probably about 600lbs. I have our front and rear plate bumpers, our bolt on sliders and our skid plates. Plus I have 50lbs of tools. Usually, I'm driving around with the wife and two kids also.

Interesting, aren't the t-cases about 300lbs as well, since you converted to 4x4? I also didn't consider this previously, but I'm at about 2000ft above sea level elevation. not sure what its like up in MD though.. Maybe this plays a difference in power? then again idk.. everytime I've driven my dads auto 4 banger, it has felt way down on power so it's more than likely just the tranny. Probably just time to swap in a 5spd and call it a day. Doesn't @n0rth have this combo in his truck? even though its an access cab, it'd be sweet to have a 5spd with the twin stick setup

Here's his build thread, not sure if you've seen it, but its definitely one of my favorites on here

Nah it's not that much. I easily bench pressed it into place. It's probably not even 100lbs. But I had felt much of a power difference after my conversion. The tires made the most noticeable difference.

The elevation varies from sea level to about 3500ft. But we are so close to other states where I'm driving often up to 6000ft. Either way, that's not all of it for sure.

That's a nice build. I definitely thinks it's the tranny. I've always driven manuals. I only ended up with an auto cause I got a really good deal and I badly needed a vehicle. Eventually I will convert it to 5-spd. I need a donor vehicle to get the engine wire harness, clutch pedal and master cylinder assy, and transmission out of.

Here’s my 2004. I have C rated 32’s and it does just fine. I wish it was 4x4 though. I’m thinking about converting it we will see.
