Can we get a pic of the tamper tape?

Seems like an asshole move by Toyota. It’s your truck so...

Not my truck anymore haha. Someone else's problem. It's functioning as "normal" for whoever owns it now

Does anyone have any real information on the actual issue? Not the dealer. Not Toyota being dicks. Just if anything has helped. Here's what I have read:
Some that have had rear differential changed has fixed the whine. Some that have it changed still have it.

Some that have lifted it report the whine going away. Some said no change.

Some have changed the viscosity of the diff fluid. No word on it helping or hurting.

The TSB insulator plate does not help all but apparently it has helped a few quiet it down.

The ultimate way to fix it is to trade or sell it. Those who have done It, good luck and have fun!

Anything I have missed? Has anyone dynamatted the rear cab wall and rear floor? Did it work?

This is a summary of this thread if you remove all the commentary. If I missed anything let me know. I'll add it.

    Sounds right.

I have a person from corporate Toyota keeping me in the loop for a potential TSB for it. They check in monthly. But as others have found, not a guarantee.

The only TSB so far is for the manual transmission.

I was at the local Toy dealership last week and I inquired about a new 3rd gen. I was advised not to trade my 4R for one as the issues [with the trans / diffs] have not been resolved. I was told maybe in 19 or we have a nice 15 with low miles for 30k. :annoyed:

Toyota failed to put oil in my transfer case. Went out at 1600 miles.

If I were to buy again - I'd make sure the dealer double checked the fluid levels with me watching.

Wow. That’s terrible. You’d think they’d catch some as significant as that.

Had my 20k service done this week. Had the tech put the truck up on the rack and listen to the rear diff, they agreed it was unusually loud and abnormal when compared to another Tacoma they had there. Ordered a new diff, should be in next week or so for installation. Just thought I'd share this data point. The tech also said it is highly unlikely Toyota would do anything like take the diff apart to see which component is wearing abnormally, etc.

My 2017 DCSB OR 4WD w/15k miles has been in the shop for 1 month now due to the rear diff replacement. It took about 2 weeks for the diff to arrive and I’ve been waiting the remainder of the time for a gasket that is back ordered. Kind of sad when my ‘97 Land Cruiser w/197k is more dependable and solid than a virtually new Tacoma!

    I’m grasping at straws here.

Not like I’d drive around in 4hi anyhow.

    Thanks for the heads up
